Hunting Day/Night

Probabily get some stick form some clever feck who knows it all but here we go:-

Bit of advice, i have a bull x pup now just turned a year old, my first lurcher as i have only been interested in the terrier sides of things, he's been out every day for a fair few months now just hunting about with the collie after rabbits and has started to mark well to ground, if he misses one in the day it does not bother me and i enjoy watching him hunting up and trying to work it all out. His prey drive is very high. Most of his work will be daytime, but i do enjoy going out lamping. The question is this with this pup getting a lot of daytime work where he is and i am letting him using his nose a lot, am i asking to much in expecting him to come back straight away on the lamp? been lamping a handfull of times and caught a few easy ones bounced of fences but if he comes close and misses hes so wound up, theres no chance of him coming back untill hes cooled off a bit so to speak? you can shout call him whatever you want. Will he get better with time and work out his best chance of another run will be if he come back?

Thanks

Rob

if another dog that knows the job is available to take out with him he will learn far quicker even if it means watching or even doubling up for a start.

hi rob , i would get your recall 100% in the day first . Then for the first few outings on lamp ,dont worry about being to tactical . As soon as your dog catches or misses ,recall - even if it means shouting, whistle or however you recall during the day . back on the lead ,praise , move on . it will soon get the hang of it . After a few outings it will know its job, and will return without recall . -robo

Taking it out with another dog would make things worst as jellosy creeps in. It's not gonna stop hunting up just because another dog has come back to you. If I was you I'd get a acme dog whistle and use that for recall. Shouting his name is next to usess as his name will get called, then here boy, come here then about a dozen words other than the dogs name. Use a whistle and be firm with him. Do it in the day time first and every time you call him, make sure her returns. Don't just call him at the end of a walk or when you see other dogs as he will ascosiate been called with the end of fun and games. Once his recall is 100% take him lamping and when he misses a rabbit. Whistle him till her returns. Don't worry about scaring off rabbits as that's tuff shit at this stage. He should soon learn to come back with out the whistle everytime the lamp is off. Oh, and don't look for him with the lamp while your calling him. He knows where you are.

i will get on top of him, and i think it might take some time, his recall is spot on otherwise, its just when hes out and if he misses one his prey drive is so strong hes not willing to accept that he has missed it if that makes sence. If i am starting to talk bollucks tell me! I am going to start to get him back to me when he is hunting up in the day i am taking him out now so see how it goes
