blue staffy 145
heard storys from mates when they used to go after them that hinds are easy enough for a single dog but big stags are hard work 1 story they told me it took the dog 20 minutes to pull the stag down , never seen it done but there genuine lads that keep top dogs and don't tell lies so i've no reason not to beleive them Quote Link to post

dytkos 17,917
No dog could take one single handed in my opinion. But im sure youll have a few people on here saying there beddie/whippet does them regularly ..... depends if its stags or heinds Not to me it doesnt. Even if there wasnt a ban on i think it would be unfair to slip a single dog on a red deer. I've seen it done (pre ban obviously) in England, Scotland and Wales. Only seen a couple of single handed stags but quite a few hinds. Edited to say that these were pen deer, not totally wild. Cheers, D. deer was banned in scotland over 50 yr ago ... a member of this forum had a 1\2 collie 1/2 grey dog that stood 27" that used to take hinds single but never took a stag infact i think it never got slipped on a stag intentionaly Doesn't mean to say no one did it though? Cheers, D. Quote Link to post
Penda 3,355
ive never saw red done prebanmyself but i know of lads who have done them using decent bull crosses single and doubled reckon the stags take abit of stopping need a dog that has no reverse gear Ive heard of people taking stags but there allways seems to be 2 dogs involved and a lamp or fence. Im not knocking the lads who have done it as the lads that have in my opinion are as game as theyre dogs as it takes bottle to slip there dogs on something that big and fast. Atb yeah defonatley i think that if your not prepared to get stuck in with the dog or dogs defonatley quarry you shouldnt be slipping the dog on one of these big fellas,me mate told me of a stag that folded his best dog in half like a piece of card board he didnt want to run Quote Link to post

Lost Generation 93
i was out lamping and down a lane infront of me was a small herd of red deer ,,,,over one hedge onto the lane an then over the next hedge a very agile animal preban what type of dog could stop a red deer if it was ever leagal Scottish Deerhound - the name should give you a clue - it's what these dogs were bred to do and did very sucessfully over hundreds of years. poacher28 120
reds on heather and reds on fields are a difrent story, give them space to open up and they dont hang about for nothing, i personaly think on heather they hit the deck sooner.they take some stopping thats for sure, but in the open , with no knee high heather, no hedges or fences to tip the odds, they are some task were ever they are Edited September 23, 2012 by poacher28 1 Quote Link to post
Boss-Hog 367
its ok running reds but they need stopping even [bANNED TEXT] good dogs on em in any terrain imo Quote Link to post
