A Little Lawn Damage........!

I was called in today to look at some lawn damage that had appeared overnight. The once finely manicured lawn looked like somebody had chain-harrowed it. My guess was that a badger was responsible whilst searching for leather jackets just under the surface but i know foxes will also do similar damage. There is a badger sett not to far away so i am guessing that that is where culprit came from........Remedy........The lawn is being sprayed to kill off the leather jackets so hopefully with the food source gone the problem will resolve itself.........Has anyone else had a similar problem?

What you've got there are Chafer Grubs I reckon. They are a big problem at the moment in certain parts of the country and will be until they go down deep for the winter. They only target sandy soils. Magpies and crows will also pick up on signs of damage to lawns and will tear it up to get to them.

 

Leather Jackets won't be a problem for a month or two yet.

 

There are only two chemical products that I'm aware of that are licenced for Chafer control. One is Provado - for amateur use. I use Merit Turf to treat them and need a PA6 to purchase and use professionally. Both will have limited success this late in the year; with the grubs now being at Instar stage 3. Best time to treat is EVERY year when the beetles emerge, mate and lay eggs (all within a fortnight) at the end of May/beginning June.

The client has a specialist lawn treatment firm to spray the turf so i expect they will have access to the correct treatment product. The crane flies are just begining to emerge now that was why i was thinking along the leather jacket lines as these will be near the surface, as another poster has mentioned.... I have witnessed Rooks damaging fairways on the golf course before now but this was the work of a snout rather than a beak. The Chafer grub is one i hadn't thought of so you could be correct, the soil is indeed very light and sandy..... but this is the first time anything like this has ever happened in this particular garden.....!

Rolfe, up until 4 or 5 years ago pretty much everyone around here had never heard of Chafer grubs - there was certainly no previouse history of them. Suddenly, lawns throughout the area were being destroyed by them. What was quite a localised problem is spreading out year on year. I come across a lot of them when moleing and have seen them spreading out to areas not seen before. The moles love 'em and get nice and fat on them. With up to a 1000 per sq m it's not surprising really. From what I understand they could disappear just as quick as they came, but it could be 30 odd years off.

 

Maybe it's Northamptonshires turn!!

how much did this cost?keep us updated on results of control of this lawn,very interesting.

these larvea can have extended cycles i asked because they may return, i had a job offered on border doing this, badger problems i deal with through eviction if sett on site or proofing both costly but lawncare through grub treatment im interested in cos companys i worked for outpriced it,im nptc licenced for horticultural and im thinking of doing the job to see the results.obviously treatments would not suit every situation but some.thanks.

I've just done a mole job in a church grounds near silverstone & they have similar damage to the grass area's I also had a mole trap missing so I'm guessing badgers or maybe a fox taking the trap complete with mole!!
