Alright lads / lassies

Got a problem and would appreciate some advice I've got a 3rd season male gos who's not long went free' first season he flew well at 1.9 great recalls over whatever distance instant, 2 nd season I never got round to flying him due to work and whatever this season Ive got him down to 1.9 again and his recalls are shite out of tress he's coming out and stayin 10ft above the fist and just flying over head and circlying over and going back into the tress it's really frustrating me now and I dunno wether he's scared of it or wether he's too heavy as he was great at the same weight in his first season, fat weight is 2.2 any advice would be great

Cheers

Jason

if 1,9 was his fit weight at the end of his first season and you never flew him last season then theres a good chance he will need to be dropped a bit more, what was his fat weight at the start of this season :hmm: just seen it on your post :icon_redface:

The weather is still warm mate so it's hard to get a bird keen..i have had the same problem myself in the past..aslong as he is bating strong and has a good bit on his keel i would shave a little bit of weight of him..as little as 1/2oz could make all the difference..the one i have here hunt's at 1lb 14oz when fit but i still have to take him down to 1lb11 1/2oz to 1lb 12oz to get some decent response to the fist in the early day's.. ..

What was your bird's weight in the first season when you where getting good recall's from tree's..whatever it was i found with my bird that 1 1/2oz heavier in his second and so on season's was bang on..

Hi Jason. It could be a lot of things that is causing the problem.

I take it you have manned him up to a good level again after his long break.

Also I have found that the amount of food offered and the type of food can have a bearing on the bird's recall.

Offer a DOC leg and you may get a half-hearted response, but offer a quail and the bird will come any distance, has been my experience.

It may also just be that the hawk is overweight, something I learned with a male gos of mine who responded well at 1lb 7 in his first year,

but after chasing him allover the place one night in his second year,

I found his proper weight was 1lb 6 :icon_eek: .

Good luck with him

Whereabouts are you in Glasgow, I live in EK just down the road.

Funny this post has been put up because im having the same trouble with my male harris,

Flew him last season 1lb 6 great response, hunted him just under 1lb 6 binding well,i brough him out prob about a month now flew him every single day for 2 weeks response instant any distance, out of trees or when hes flying above me,only flew him twice in the last 2 weeks has i had problems with my scales and work load, weighed him earlier 1lb6 took him out and his response was shit,he came after some wiggling of food on my glove ? when he did come he snatched it and went a field away ;) ... again took some persuding...

Think i may have to drop him again till his response is instant then slowly push it back up...cant believe it was going to hunt with him tomorrw..If anybody has some other advice please feel free to let us know cos looks like a few of us could use some tips and hints what to do

i would allways drop a second or third year bird down in weight utill it responds how i want them to regardless of the flying weight in the preveous season. my advice would be to keep taking weight out of them untill they do what you want they will never starve before coming for food especialy a mature bird who has done it before
