A few years ago i saw a big gang of lads hanging off an exersize cart coming down the hill at appleby, the poor pony was flat out and the weight of the cart and people pushed it over,it fell badly and after getting it to stand and trying to whip it on the twats realised it had a broken leg. They took the cart and harness off the poor b*****d and left it stood where it was. Thats a true story and i have pics to prove it,so much for these so called horsemen. mattygg 0 Posted June 18, 2007 Report Share Posted June 18, 2007 Please dont get me wrong in this reply, I think it is tragic that the horse drowned and yes he is a coward for running off, however, horses are a currency for these folks, I struggle very hard to believe that anyone would do this on purpose when the horse would have held a decent value at the fair. Irresponsable yes, intentional, I would not have thought so. More to the point to put this into perspective, I have been around horses and on horses since I was knee high to a grasshopper, the amount of fatal accidents that happen in racing for example at point to points the most famous and publicised race, the grand national - everyone jokes that the one they bet on always seems to end up getting shot! Then look to badminton horse trials this year, one had a heart attack (could not be helped) another knocked a marker flag off the jump and staked itself in the stomach, lost too much blood to be saved. Apparently this was the first horse fatality in 10 years at the fair according to the police report I heard, this may not be the case, I am not sure. My point is when you have that volume of liveestock in an area things are bound to go wrong. I think this incident could have been avoided, however looking at it in perspective of the number of horses that are around the fair it does not seem to have too bad a track record compared to organised equestrian activities. The tradition of having the horses in the river is to wash them off to look their best to be sold. I believe that the bloke does have a lot to answer for and was either too heavy handed or possabely drunk? He should therefore be held to account for his actions, however as I said the horse would have been of value to him and drowning it would have never been his intention. All I am trying to do is to put it into perspective, is it not tradition in some cultures to sacrifice goats by throwing them off buildings, that is no accident. I also saw some tethered horses in a right sh*t state. Don't get me wrong, most of the horses on show were in tip top condition, but the way some of them were being treated just wasn't right. Young lads showing off mostly. I also saw more than enough very young horses in harnesses pulling traps and when i say young horses, i mean not much more than yearlings. I was told that the horse that was killed didn't even belong to the fella with the bald head, and that he took it in the river because he was a potential buyer. More bullsh*t bravado imo.
