stewie 3,387
Im of the opinion that a lot of these players who show great talent real young in England can often have a shorter lifespan at the very highest level.....players like Rooney,Michael Owen,Theo Walcott hit such a peak so young it becomes hard to maintain and improve as much as we expect them to......abroad where the game is slower young players are not burnt out by their mid 20,s..........hopefully Rooney still has more to come but it wouldnt surprise me if we,ve already seen the best of him. unlike steven gerrard...... Got to say Steven Gerrard has stayed at a high level of performance for a very long time he really is a top player, maybe it's time for him to move on to a big club so he can finally win the prem Gnasher: That is the worry some players do seem to burn out quickly, Rooney had a good season last year although he seemed to struggle to really take the big games by the scruff of the neck and has looked poor for England for ages, although Owen and Walcott were/are plagued by injuries maybe their sheer pace is a factor there, Rooney although quick is not like them and he's not had so many injuries he just looked jaded against Everton, first game of the season his old club you would expect him to start with a bang ( taking nothing from Everton who were superb on the day) and was off the pace at the Euros, is fitness a problem? From playing half decent standard I know before I hit 25 I found keeping fit and getting up to match fitness easy from 25 onward I had to work harder to maintain a decent level ( not comparing with the proffesional game just a thought).

gnasher16 31,602
unlike steven gerrard...... I might be wrong but didnt Rooney/Walcott/Owen all debut for England at 17 or 18.....think Gerrard was 20 or 21 As Newkid said is it any wonder a player in their mid 20,s starts getting plagued with injuries when they are playing at the very highest level of the game before their body has even had time to mature.
