Guest vin
Last friday night I cam home form work to find all 8 of my ferrets had escaped the coop...Somehow they had managed to open a locked door and get out (or someone was mooching in my yard and let them out..I suspect kids.) I managed to find all but 2 of them in and around the garden and the next few houses gardens local to mine, but after a few hours of looking around and shining my lamp up and down people back gardens at 2am i had to give up..the next day my big hob was back waiting to get back in with his ladies...But my best Jill never returned...I left food and cage open for her and laid traps..but nothing..I phone all the local services even the police...lol..who did point me to a ferret found that next day...but it was,nt mine...I put up posters local in the shops with rewards offered..tried all the ferret rescues..and even joined a few new sites trying to find her..Also put an add in local paper. I received a phone call from a lady who said she seen my little Fert dead on side of Road not too far from where i live the day after she had escaped..It sounded like my ferret with the description and all made sense with the times and place etc etc. Gutted is not the word. . . She was my best Jill..the mother of my kits..the surrogate mother to my other orphaned kits..she was the best worker out of all my ferts...the only one I could/would bet money on..she was absolutely spot on,never missed a bunny,She even caught them on top in cover if they wearnt quick enough. I dont think I could ever replace her...she was a one off ! I have 2 of her kits...so that some consolation...But they are years away from the experience she had.. I lost my other good working jill with kits earlier in the year. So i now find myself starting the season with a load of young inexperienced ferrrets with no Leader to show them the way...I had all my hopes on my jill teaching the young uns the way to go. . . Now all I have is a young fert from last year thats done a little bit,and a micro thats tiny tiny, but is no way what I would call a good worker...its not done enough. So its back to basics for a while and start em off in some small sets... hope and pray they come good for the season. Quote Link to post

Guest vin
I wouls be gutted also if i had lost a ferret that could catch rabbit's on top..my dog's can't even do that.. only in thick cover mate when they dont wanna come out on that odd occasion when the dogs just not quick enough..she had caught a good few when they,ve slipped the net and are running about on top hole hopping.. she was a quick little thing always on the go at twice the speed of the others.
