LAME working cocker

Recommended Posts

hi all ,

wondered if i could pick your brains..

i took my 9 month old working cocker for a walk yesterday, no longer than usual. he had a swim in the sea so now has the runs as normal after being in the sea..

but today i let im out and he is lame on his left hind leg. he puts weight on it every so often and did see him use it a few time walking round the garden.

is this just a case of him over doing it yesterday and? as he does run round like a looney and does swim for england given the chanse.

he is up to date with japs, wormer and frontline..

as it stands i will rest him and let him out in the garden just so he can use it a bit, but will not let him out doing what a cocker does best.

Get a proper diagnosis: if it is joint injury then may need complete rest or lead only walking: not loose in the garden even: no running. See a good bone man as you would if you had a lurcher with a similar problem. No point just waiting to see if it gets better, though if it is just a slight strain then a fortnight's rest may do the trick. But you don't know the exact nature of the problem, so see an expert.

sounds very similar to my cocker [rip] who at 3 yrs old was the pictureof health and a bloody good worker she started a bit of a limp in hind leg which i put down to aknock or something but after a week i sensed something wasnt right ,so off to vets to be told her knee joint was fecked as it was popping out every few minutes- hope yours is not as serious as this mate -billy

The biggest problem with undiagnosed injuries is that dogs manage pain very well indeed, especially forward going dogs like Spaniels. The fact that the pup seems better now doesn't mean that it shouldn't have rest. It could have simply bruised a bone, but it could also have strained a muscle or sprained a joint: both of which are injuries need a lot more rest than just a couple of days on the lead.

If the pup doesn't come back to normal within a few days it would be a good idea to see a specialist vet (running dog vet) to get a proper diagnosis in case it has done one of the above injuries. Yes, it might seem fine in a couple of weeks, but that sort of injury can come back to haunt the dog later on, leading to premature arthritis or a shortened working life. I know you can't wrap them in cotton wool all the time, but paying attention to injuries and giving them the correct treatment can go a long way to ultimately keeping a dog working longer and better and without pain.

good advice skycat when you use a good bone man for years you get to know a lot more to do with injurys. how you can think because the dog leg looks the proplem it could be trapped nerves in the spine and its easyer for a dog to carry his leg to ease pain the list can go on.a classic one was a mate add a dog that could'nt jump in the back of a van told him for ages to get to the bone man anyway i took it one day for him with mine all was needed was its back lined up and clicked in and the magic pen to release the traped nerves in the spine. soon as it was done the dog jumped in the van like the rest so get him looked at
