well the 'all round' is usually hard to decipher... my idea of an all round dog is a lamping dog that can take rabbits hares and foxes... the best i've had was a alsation x greyhound... he was hit by a car and had to be put down but f**k he was good in his day

everybody has different consepts of an ALLROUNDER what do you call a allrounder mine would be a dog that can catch fur and feather it should be able to catch rabbits hares deer fox pheasants the lot really how many people own a dog like that iam talking if you are going out for one of these quarry you are going to get one 9 times out of 10 ....example your out to get a daytime hare or two can your dog catch one ????your out for a deer same again has your dog got what it takes to sort one out .....ect ect ....if so you have an allrounder.. its hard to say what the best you have seen unless you actually owned the dog ....how many people have you been out with where you know for a fact that its done the lot i dont mean the odd one ...all dogs get lucky that dosent mean its an allrounder ..iam talking about going out for one thing and getting it ...some say the oppertunist lurhcer is an allrounder .. :hmm: not sure i agree ....the answer to your question is ive seen a lot of good dogs what the owner would call an allrounder .....cross dosent seem to come into it they have all been different crosses ..... ;)

my best all rounder was bred by a deerhound lurcher x lurcher bitch put to a track dog.

he was 25" rough coated and could pass for a beddy cross.

He took every thing from partridge to fallow, wonderful, fast and a joy to own.

sadly broke his shoulder and a back leg striking a hare on a tarmac road after my mates 6 mth old springer pup pushed it out of cover .it was the middle of summer and we where only out chewing the fat, that was the only hare ive seen on that road before or since and my dog had to be PTS over it

The best dog i've had was Paddy a DeerH x GreyH over 3/4GreyH x 1/4Collie, took everything and did everything i asked daytime and on the lamp, he once tried to retreive an otter much to the otter's annoyance he caught when the lamp was off so i did'nt see it before he was bringing it back the otter was giveing him a hard time he did'nt want to give up his catch and i did not want the frigger near me so i was telling him no he could'nt understand why i was'nt going and takeing the catch off him instead i was backing away while he was trotting toward me, (the otter had made a mess of him by now) i was shi**ing myself because of what had he in his mouth and the noise would of woke the dead, it felt like a life time but could not of been more than 45second's to a Minute. In the end he dropped it (thank fook) and the otter bounded down to the pond seemingly unharmed, but that was the end of the night's lamping for me and Paddy, what a mess, but he did'nt show pain. Paddy was stolen when he was 3yrs old along with Riley an 11month old 1stx DeerHxGreyH pup while i was at work, in the middle of the day, and ofcourse none of the neighbour's seen anything

the best i seen was a 2 year cross saluki collie called jack he was 26 tts he was breed by a x gamekeeper i knew and he was real fast took all game i no some out there may think it was a strange cross to breed but it was rough ground he worked that was why the collie was breed in to him to give him strong legs he seem to know what his quary was going to do before it done it not only did he have speed but seem to never lack stamina

An allrounder to me is a dog that can work day or night in any given situation i.e lamping, hunting hare, ferreting and capable of the odd big fella by the time a dogs well grown its not that hard to achieve all these qualitys if a dogs got speed and a bit of brain.

i had one too, i would put her second only because of her fine coat and the times i had to get her mended... she was bred to the alsation x greyhound and the pups were an asortment of sizes but all were game as hell and speed machines i'm sorry now that i didnt keep one of the bigger ones back :( ... the future father inlaw has one of the bitches... i had a picture of her up a few months ago but i cant find it
