i'd stick to the teddy till the penny really dropped and the pup (who's still a baby) got the words and actions (for me sit, stay, fetch, reward ) really embedded, but like bryson says keep the sessions short let the pup play afterwards and don't let it get boring atb

I have a 7mth old pup here that will retrieve absolutly anything but as soon as she see's the rabbit skin dummie it seem's like all the training has gone out the window..like mentioned lay of the rabbit skin till the penny has dropped and just take your time..little and often and alway's do your training one on one with no other dog's or distraction's in the area..

As others have said, its still only very young and you will get set backs. Keep the retrieve training going with easy to retrieve items, the teddy, and then slowly move the dog onto other objects, fluffy toys are fun for the dog to retreive, i got my old dogs to retrieve shotgun cartridges, sets of keys, hammers, dog bowls, anythingg weird, ungainly, heavy etc BUT i only introduced unusual and difficult objects when the dogs were older. Also NEVER do retrieve training with a young pup in the presence of another dog. Keep it fun, light hearted and all sessions short.............

As far as retrieving with a young pup is concerned: LESS IS ALWAYS MORE. I would only ever throw a toy once or twice, (per day) at the most, at this age, with tons of praise and a little game of tug when the pup does bring it back to you. Then get him to let go of the toy by offering him another item he can go away and chew on by himself. There's not much reward for a pup to bring something to you just for you to take it off him again, unless the pup is an obsessive type like some Collies or terriers. But at this age a pup loses interest in a game very quickly and if you just keep trying to repeat the same thing over and over again you'll turn him right off the game.

And never ever do any training with other dogs around. You want the pup to focus only on you, and you have to make yourself exciting and fun to be with. Tiny short lessons which are built round games is the way to go.

my dog is 18 month now and training to retrieve seemed a nightmare at first until towards end of last season when i took him for a few hours ferreting with my friends dog. first rabbit he ever cought he brought straight back tail wagging live to hand and still dose the same now. sometimes messes around when around other dogs and still wont retrive a stick or a ball properly and no matter were i throw his teddy he just runs back in the house and hides it in his bed. Strill try every day get him retrieving other things but seems to be a very long proces or maybe just me but i am over the moon with how he brings rabbit back and wont let go till i have it. just hope it carrys on over the next season.
