Irish Game Fair at Shanes - Prizes

The reason is that as you know pups especially of mixed breeds often look much different when they are fully grown. A puppy that looks well balanced at 6 months can be totally out of balance when it is fully mature and vice versa. Any dog being crowned All Ireland Champion should be a fine example of its breed type and in our opinion to enure this the dog needs to be at least 1 year old.

at least 1 year old, but sure is puppy class not for 1 year olds and younger, so if the winner of puppy class is 1 year old exactly then would it not be old enough to be a fine example of its breed type. is this the way all shows work the puppy winner does not be in the final along with all the other class winners of its breed.

I think you will find that at most if not all of the shows, a puppy is classes as a dog under the age of 1 year, on the day it turns 12 months and has it's first birthday it is no longer a puppy it is an adult and has to enter the appropriate class.

pups have a final and they have to have a cut of point so thats a year as it has been for as long as i remember, theres hardly much point in an arguement as it cant change so enjoy the shows and relax

will there be a stall for the iwtf to help all the working terrier folk ?

As this is our 25th All Ireland Championships staged at our 50th Irish Game Fair , since we launched the Game Fair concept in Ireland in 1978, we have pulled out all of the stops to make this a memora

you say "The reason is that as you know pups especially of mixed breeds often look much different when they are fully grown. But what if your pup winner is 6months old? Without opening old wounds - at Ballywalter I was asked to rule on three whippets as to whether I thought they were 'pure bred' whippets and as such eligible to run in the whippet race. Two were easy the third was not. It was in my opinion either a poor specimen of a whippet ( fine looking animal who can run) but being too large and not fitting the whippet standard that I had been used to both as a 'an allrounder' judging BIS and variety classes at KC shows AND as someone who has been looking at whippets at working shows with perhaps the objective of getting one for racing etc. Why I made, ultimately I think the wrong decision , was because I was told that a KC judge of whippets, whose judgement I respect, had placed it highly in puppy classes in fact I think it may have won a puppy class. On subsequent investigation when I found that the breeding was unclear the owner sportingly agreed that it would be withdrawn from future whippet races. Now if this dog or similar had gone through a puppy class and become All Ireland Champion , in my opinion this would have demeaned the title of not only the longest running competition but the most prestigious show in Ireland.

I appreciate there is a fine line between 11months and 27 days and 12 months plus one but one has to put a border somewhere. We do have an All Ireland Puppy Championship for pups.

Tango,

As usual the voice of reason. But I will look at topping up the Puppy Champions Prize again. But I should have thought having your puppy dog as All Ireland Puppy Champion at the 25th All Ireland show under three judges should have been satisfying enough.

fair enough.good to hear there is a puppy championship,I remember few years ago at a few "smaller"shows an 11 month old pup winning puppy class and going onto win reserve champion, it just shows at 11 months it looked the part, the judge had a good eye for a dog/pup as it turned out a great worker too . im not all into showing like as most shows its all about who knows the judge best, but as your judges are all from Scotland i look forward to their unbiased opinions and hope yous get a good turn out of dogs (and pups lol). so good luck with your showing and racing!!!!

Thanks. Yes there are arguments for and against and at KC shows the pup is eligible for top honours. We have always excluded it and as my main role in our terrier & lurcher events is to ensure we have the best prizes funds, help with judges etc not define the actual classes or how the event is run on the day I will put it to the guys who do run it. . I suggest improvements the final decision is with the guys actually running it.

Why change something that does not need changed pups do not need to go into the final at the end of the day a pup should not be working so how should it be aloud to compete with working dogs. And even at a year old a lot of lurchers have not got fully formed mussels thus not a true example of what the dog is going to be like

id say alot of the pups the genuine hunting folk have at the shows even though they r under than a year they would already of bin in more green fields than the (rosette chasing) dogs in the other classes!!! and what chance would the pup have in the final, prob none. why should it not be allowed to compete against so called working dogs, are they testing the dogs on quarry or is it not basically just about looks e.t.c. your trying to say all the dogs in the show are working. most of them ive seen must be on the dole or else their getting D.L.A.

Hunting folk that know what they are doing would know not to take a dog hunting until they are about 18 months to 2 year old and I am not talking about going up the park and giving a dog a slip on a bunny.I'm talking about a good 8 hours in the hills with the lamp on a WINTERS nite.Your last comment say it all about what is wrong with the shows at the moment people taking pups out from an early age working them on hard summer ground getting them injuries and then complaining when they don't get placed in shows for the rest of its life due to good judges knowing were to look for the injuries, then when that happens apparently everything else in the show was a show pony.

well i mustn't know what] i am doing, even though all i meant was that even if the pup only ever had its teeth into a couple of quarry it wud already be more of a "working dog" than most of the dogs that you see in the ring. and pups not getting placed cause of injuries cause of hard ground, not round ere the place is a swamp cause of the rain we get, i will be watching( in the puppy classes) out for the lame, hop along pups that shouldnt of bin allowed out of the kennel til they were 2 year old. most of the dogs in the ring are show ponies, what odds if they are, if thats what their owners r into showing not hunting. but you cannot say a pup should not be judged against a working dog when you do not know what each dog in the ring does out of that prestigious (lmao) show ring. unless your that much of an expert and you can just look in the dogs eyes and know it has caught vermin lol Edited by miss the fox

MTF ,

For better or for worse the decision has been taken on the All Ireland Championships that pups are not eligible to compete for the overall championships BUT as I have said we do have a Puppy Championship where the whippet, lurcher & terrier pup compete against each other under three judges to be judged All Ireland Puppy Champion 2012 and apart from the title the winner will have a tankard and £25.

The Keep er Lit Dog Show and Raceday Sunday 20th July 2025
Doagh Equestrian is situated on the beautiful Antrim coast in the village of Doagh, Co Antrim. This was a new venue for the “Keep er Lit” Dog show and Race day and the ideal spot for   last Sundays Show.
From early morning, cars and trailers arrived from North and South of the border. Some people came as far away as Limerick and Drogheda with families and dogs in tow. Our good canine folk love a good dog show in the summer and a chat with like minded people. They certainly were not disappointed at the Keep er Lit show.
As the show progressed, so did the banter and the craic. The rings were well spaced out with a good long race track. Paul Boyd was there with his country sports stand, with everything needed in the hunting fraternity.
Some very tasty burgers were available on site and an Equestrian shop with great discounts on offer on the day. I had to take control of my retail therapy when I got into that shop, as I was like a child in a toy shop with to much to choose from.
The weather was glorious all day and at times to warm. As usual the raffle generated a great buzz around the field with some great prizes on offer.
The show started with the racing first at approximately 12.30

      Congratulations to all above winners.
And Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the judges and their ring stewards on the day,on behalf of the Keep er Lit Team for a job well done.
Strong Dog Judge : Gareth Barnett
      Lurcher Judge       : Gerard Melaugh
      Whippet Judge      : Colin Maguire
      Terrier Judge         : Martin Breen
      Pets Judge             : Gail Ross
Judging is not an easy job, but you were consistent and fair, and very successful with the end product.
The racing was carried out as usual to perfection by The Mc Grath Racing Club Carlow. These people have many years experience in the Canine world both in showing and racing and their input helps to alleviate the pressure on the show organizer on the day. A job well done Biddy and team.
Some lovely photographs were taken on the day by various people, and no doubt these will be up on the site shortly.
And Finally, Finally, they say behind every good man is a good woman and Leigh Thompson along with Paddy Gibson, you both definitely fitted into that category. Your show was run with impeccable organisation. It was evident on the day a lot of hard work and sleepless nights was put into  this now annual Show. Leigh and Paddy you pulled out all the stops on the day and produced a top class show in a top class venue. Well done and a credit to you both.
I am Looking forward to more of the same in 2026. Thank you for the memories. To we meet again God Bless.
