blackdug 90
my whippet bull started to look a bit cramped up last week and i thought she was about to go on season as her cramping up in the stomach is normally her sign ....anyhow after a few days i decided to take her to the vet as she was walking about slowly and was starting to have trouble doing a shit so off we went and the vet was full of bad news he said she was showing signs of nerve or bone damage on the spine ,,,i was blown over as she is my best dog and i love her to bits... she had not ran into anything or had an accident to my knowledge so i asked for an x ray and she got one yesterday ,,,the x ray results showed that just were the tail meet,s the spine there is some nerve damage and the best he could do was to refer me to a specialist vet ...he also explained that is why she was having trouble doing the toilet and said she was basically about to go incotenent on me as she could not control her bowel movements as the nerves that help her go to the toilet are based in that area of the spine ....does anyone have any experience or have seen this happen to one of there dogs as i am totally gutted about this happening to my wee pal also what do you think about me taking her to a boneman as i will try anything to keep this dog about.. she has just turned 6 years of age ...cheers for replys

sandymere 8,263
I’m guessing that the vet is thinking along the lines of cord compression; if so don’t let anyone manipulate the back as it could have devastating effect. For now I’d see the specialist to get a proper diagnosis, x-rays aren’t a good showing soft tissue like nerves as much a harder substance like bones so it would be difficult for the vet to get the full picture unless there are marked bony abnormalities
skycat 6,174
When one of my lurchers was diagnosed with meningitis she was referred to the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket. They do MRI scans there and have top notch people there including full time neurologists. Costs a lot of money though.
blackdug 90
thanks for the replys ,,,there was a bit of bone abnormality showing in the xray that,s what made me think about a boneman (maybe)...... you could tell the vet did not want to or could not give me anymore advice on the matter thats why they refered me to the specialist but he was sure there was nerve damage due to her having trouble passing a crap....i had a good look over her today in the sun and i noticed that when i touched her tail she did not notice so i got a pin and gave her tail a prick with it and i got no reaction from her ,,,she did not notice being pricked by a pin so it ain,t looking good ......feckin heart broken .....spent all day lying in the sun with her just using each other as a pillow ...ain,t life a c*nt sometimes
sandymere 8,263
See what the specialist says then make a decision on how to deal with it for the best. Good luck
buster gonads 862
Blackdug, My brother-in-law has been in a very bad way with compression to his cord in his spine affecting his nerves to his legs and feet, he couldnt walk, shit or feel anything in his feet apart from them feeling red hot all the time, you couldnt touch them, he,s had 2 opp,s to try and sort the problem out, had a MRI scans etc, they,v told him to take it easy and his cord which i gather has been flattend or nipped in some way will repair itself to some extent given time, which it has, he still has discomfort but is walking ok now and the pain is nothing compared to what it was, this has taken around 12 month, what iam thinking, and i may be way out, is that if the bone abnormality was removed, presuming thats the cause, there may still be hope that the cord/nerve damage might repair itself somewhat given time. good luck with it, buster. Ratreeper 441
My dog was hit by a car and damaged his spine and was left utterly paralysed from the ribcage back, with no feeling in his toes or otherwise. The vet said I can either have him pts or take him home and see if anything improves, so I took the latter in the knowledge that if he didn't improve within a fortnight then he never would. I have to be honest, it was f*****g awful seeing him like that and I thought I had made the selfish decision...but miraculously he regained the ability to move his legs, clumsily at first but within a couple of weeks he was trying to stand, but due to ligament damage he couldn't support his weight before his op. Anyway if your dog has swelling on the spine then there is still hope she can recover, if you are willing to crate her and carry her outside constantly so she can relieve herself as well as the hours I spent massaging and trying to stimulate the nerves to work again, which might be voodoo but I was trying everything. I hope you get some good news because I know how it feels, I don't want to get your hopes up but I was just wanted to say that even if the odds are slim, there is still a chance. Attack Fell Terrier 864
F*ck me BlackDug I ain't felt so sorry for someone in ages. Just this morning I was lying out in the back garden under the sun with my Lurcher giving him a good fuss, and I thought to myself what it'll be like when he's gone? Now I've read this thread and I don't really know what to say to you apart from that I really hope that things turn out for the better for you and the bitch. All the best mate!
