I,ll bow down on the Lisbon Lions thing as id be talking about a side i have no real knowledge of.......the simple point i was trying to make being the nature of competetive sport dictates very few athletes/teams from " yesterday " would beat their equivalents today.........in any sport.......that doesnt stop them being greats of their era.

As regards Best/Pele....................Both these great players would of spent more time in the physios room than on the pitch.......Pele never played in the Spanish or Italian leagues club level so never witnessed tough tackling on a week to week basis......Likewise George Best never competed at world level in International football but did at club level....my belief is neither man was physically durable enough to consistently produce great football in todays game........players like Messi or even Maradona are/were strong physical specimens capable of grace/speed/skill......but also had physical presence.......Ronaldo being a great example for me he is one of the most complete footballers ive ever seen.

No not every player needs those qualities but i think in any conversation about the worlds all time great players these are the type of players that will always come to mind.......i mean i think Julian Dicks was better than all of them but he wouldnt be on the tip of many folks tongues :icon_redface:

Never heard of Julian Dicks.....................was he a footballer?..

I think your point about athletes getting better is a very good point but i dont think that can be carried over to football as its a team sport and not an individual one. George Best never played lots of International football because he was from NI, if he was English he would have played loads. Pele i cant really speak about that much as i never even seen him play but i do think listening to others he wasn't to bad a football player....... :icon_redface::D

I also think the best player in the EPL is Drogba by a country mile at the minute....if he'd just stop rolling around like a little pansy i think he would get a lot more respect. Ronaldo was the same for a few seasons.....lying on the floor more than he was on his feet.

Never heard of Julian Dicks.....thats a crime, the greatest left back never to play for England......twice as good as Pearce and 3 times as hard !!......but the fa bottled it because of his reputation...........one of the cleanest strikers of a football you could ever wish to see......id love to of seen him in a penalty shoot out for England !!!!!......................Lionel Messi.....pffffff ! ;)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zWjqUBf9z4

thought you did not drink Julian. Dicks better than physco you having a giraffe. Gnasher

lol must agree on that!!!...

If the right attitude won football matches then Julian Dicks would be Real Madrid, Barcelona and Man Unt all rolled into one.........the bloke was simply top draw, every team should have a Julian!

Hands up here, as you well know I am no fan of how England play football and I didn't give them a prayer before they went....but I will eat my words and say:

I was impressed with Andy Carrols work ethic and his goal was absolutely out of the top drawer

The whole teams work rate I thought was very good, they played to their strengths so fair one

Against Italy I can't say a bad work about them to be honest, they worked hard, tried to play football and take the game to Italy.....I thought it was a cracking game.

Both teams strikers were not sharp enough and it could have easily gone either way......if I had to make a criticism, it would be that Walcott came on be didn't perform and Cole was a bit of a clown shaping up for a penalty against a keeper like Buffon like that.

BUT, at least he had the balls to step up and take one and you can't knock his performance in the games.

All in, they proved my expectation wrong and good for them.....

but was rooney shite wilf??

No, he was rusty.....his touch in the second half was much better.

I didn't think it was fair that he got put in after the other lads had played well but that said, when he took that penalty you can see he is a class act as that was a very good pen against a keeper of Buffons stature.

I think it also needs to be taken into account Rooney will never thrive or be seen at his best playing Hodgsons style of football......he,s going to spend most of the game with his back to goal......must say i agree with Wilf about that Andy Carrol goal that was a great example of perfecting what you are good at.

I suppose gnash it depends what you like to see in football. Today's game is hardly recognizable compared to old. You say you think it's more competitive now because the players are fitter etc. I suppose it's how you interpet competitive. For me watching a player of old go hard into tackles, watching the likes of wee Jimmy johnstone run rings around opponent players as if the ball is stuck to his foot. I'm talking about a heavy, water soaked ball and him wearing big clumsy boots. Watching him take the pish out of big bruiser defenders out to do him damage, only to pick himself up after a leg breaking tackle and pretend it never hurted cos he had pride. You say it's better now and yet you admit there is a lack of quality in today's players than old, so what is it you actually like about football? Players can be as fit or tuned to the max nowadays but if they can't pass a ball, it's not much of a spectacle. I preferred the old days when you had great players and football was a contact sport. That's probably why I still prefer British football compared to say Spanish. All those finely tuned athletes rolling about makes me want to spew. Yes modern technology has enhanced today's players. It makes an average player look good. Balls swerve easier, are lighter, the no touch rules have allowed class players show off their flare, just a pity they are as rare as rocking horse shit. As for the Lisbon lions not being able to beat leicster these days, aye I'd probably give you that one. But then again, they are getting on a bit these days ;).

f*****g excellent post gnasher :clapper: :clapper: :clapper: I did a bit of leg pulling during englands time there but I won't now. I know what it's like supporting a poor team. You guys did well with what you had. Football is in decline on these shores and I can't see that changing in my

lifetime. I was watching the Germans the other day and I soon realized how poor football is in general now. We applaud a team for stringing more than 6 passes together. Even the great

brazil are losing their flare. They have turned all European in their play. Football is Definately on the decline worldwide. Just our shores are leading the downward trend.

lol yea brazil are shit... if they dont win the next world cup ill eat my hat... ;)

Sometimes Stewie it's best to keep quiet and be thought a fool than open your mouth and confirm it :) where did I say brazil was shit? I said they are losing their flare. You might be too young to remember brazil of old, they were unplayable. They did things with the ball no man had a right to. Their one touch football round the box had you scratching your head wondering how they did it. As I say, nowadays they have lost much of that flare and look European. Still a very good side and while their country remains poor, I'm sure that will continue.

Germany Spain final for me. I'd like to see Germany win because I prefer the way they play. Spain are becoming a bit of a joke of themselves IMO, even though they keep winning matches.

I dont remember saying that....where did i say theres a lack of quality in todays players ?.............

Apart from that Baw you make some great points that are certainly worth thinking about  ..............As regards whats competetive.....i dont see simply " going in hard " like they did in the good ol days,as being more competetive.................Wee Jimmy Johnstone who you refer to might of been able to run rings round big bruising defenders ( your words ) back then......but would he be able to to out think and out manouvre todays defenders who are not only big bruisers but can also play a bit and read the game......yesterdays centre halfs were purely stoppers you couldnt imagine big Willie Young bringing the ball out of defence and making cross field pinpoint passes could you,but they can today.........thats what im saying its not just a case of faster, stronger its every quality a player needs is an improvement on yesterday and thats how it should be in any sport....................so for me thats a good thing.

The points you make about pitches, boots, the ball etc they are all great points and obviously the argument could be what would wee Jimmy Johnstone be like with a pair of boots like carpet slippers and a pitch like a bowling green.....and thats what holds the interest for me with these type conversations.

Nobody like the Spanish rolling around thing no of course not.....but thats the Spanish mentality, few could argue they dont play the game how it should be played.....Malt has just said they are becoming a joke :icon_eek: ........I believe when you aim for success in any walk of life be it sport, business or whatever you look to see how the succesful people do things and try to do similar...............The British way of playing football is great we all love it but on a world scale its not succesful.........if we want our own little exciting league then thats fine, but we cant then moan when we come unstuck against the worlds elite....Spain are world champions for a reason,Barcelona are possibly the greatest club side in history for a reason......if pure football is proving the way to be succesful as a football fan im not going to argue with that are you.
