How to work out your max range shooting distances per shooting position

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

In this episode of VerminHuntersTV I am trying to answer some private messages (PM’s) from YouTube in regards to people asking me how to work out their max range to humanely shoot and hunt vermin from each various shooting position they use.

I hope that this helps some people out and is just away I think that is pretty easy to use and utilise without any real problems or costs.

Si.

That’s some very nice shooting there Simon , and only the second time I have ever watched you shooting from that particularly difficult position with an air rifle. I have to say that was very impressive to say the least :icon_eek: . You sir are definitely the real deal and I don’t think anyone can have any doubts about that after watching that display of marksmanship. 29mm target, 27 yards, 3 out of 3 and standing unsupported too. Brilliant . I think that there will be a lot of HFT shooters wandering which league you will be entering and hoping it’s not theirs.

See you again soon at the meet Simon.

It wasn't as impressive as your making out Tan buddy.

There are lads on the HFT circuit that can do what I did there at 30 and 35 metres on a bad shooting day.

I'm no where near their standard pal, but with lots more practice who knows what can be achieved?

Thanks for the words of support though pal, they are appreciated.

See you again soon mate but this time bring your Ultra with you too.

another great vid si really enjoyed that.

i bet id probably get 3/3 to about 10m maybe 15m, absolutely no chance at 25m!!

like you said tho we have to give the quarry as much respect as possible and the percentage of standing un-supported shots we take at live animals is minimal.

we should always take rested whenever posssible, even at close range 10yards for example, id still walk to a tree to lean against before i took a shot, or kneel down. if your not confident you dont take the shot its as simple as that.

keep the great vids coming pal

oh and all the best of luck with your hft ;)

This is an area that the hunter has over a pure HFT shooter. For the 25 years of hunting (no longer hunt) I was forced to practice freehand shooting. There is a new style of HFT coming up which is Sporting Rifle HFT. Here only non-adjustable bog standard hunter rifles can be used and absolutely no holding onto anything when taking the shot. The first one took place at Worcester Air Rifles last Sunday and in this class I took top score where normally I would hover around the 50 ex 60 mark. If any of you hunters fancy a crack at a discipline that is less "formal" than a HFT comp then you might fancy a go.

i always shot free standing years back, right up till i was out of practice, its a hands on thing, a simple way of thinking about it is, if you can hit stood anything else is a plus...

serves a coule purpses, first is if your getting regular shooting it builds your arms a little bit, gets you used to holding and moving the gun around, verses a cumfy bench and bi pod... left sat on the table you visit and barely touch the thing. (although it is a disiplin in its own right). so its developing a grip basically, takes time to grow your mind and mustle co-ordination. (you use the skill or lose the skill)

most people find its a time in afair, the more you do it the better you get, so coming from a life span angle, you've got 'X' amount of years to improve, if you spend all your time in the begining on a bench your not developing the tool hand/eye co ordination, after 5 years prone i'd hazard a gues you'll not hit much stood tbh.(unless you actualy find your mind set...every one learns a different way.)

somethng not many folks mension is the 'aproach' to a quary shot, theres a true line up with your body and gun, involving a very fluient eye releif and posision, if your off the line the paralex helps but your not on the target as well as you owt to be.. again this takes a fair bit of practice to acheive.

when it comes, it exstends to where you'd walk/stalk up to, and puts you well on line for a shot, sort of a naturaly accuring posision that involves your awarnes of distance and surroundings, hard to exsplain it.. but its an 'aproach' to a shot, one that is bang on a true line from the target, to your gun which is perfectly aligned with your body, and your mind.. an all in one if you like lol.

(for some this involves the apearence of the pellet in flight..curious situation, it involves great things like shit!! the powers dropped, alas nope, your seeing it with your mind, a bit like finding the pellet.. another time in thing, some call it in touch with your tragectory.)

first sign that your not on line is waving the gun around putting the cross hair on, i think this is called target aquision in the bum fodder mags lol. idealy the aproach (including your sat or prone) is you line up buy seeing the target, you know where it is and the gun comes up cross hair on the target, all the breath holding, left righting up downing and trigger snatching and 'self jinx' stuff just hasnt got time or space to exsist.. up on bang.....never miss's.. well, ideally that is lol.

( a nice wording is 'your on it').

the actual 'shooting time' is split seconds when you work it out, how long to squeeze off the trigger? plus how long to see, lift the gun, find the scope image, wiggle about finding the target, 'yeh..' now put the cross hair there.. oh? how far is it? shit, is there anything around or behind it.. very cluttered process. or, fluently its there (no distance thoughts, you know), lift on to the dot/hair, poise and bang... it all becomes a one thing.. so as with the breathing thing, where the longer you try to hold it still and/or the more effert you put into holding it firmly still the worse the wobble on the target, the worse the wobble the harder you try untill yu head gets frustrated, your heart rate goes up and anafelactic mustles start (the mustles use up the oxygen) and yu start to shake, can take as little as 15 seconds standing to warrent a put the gun down and have a rest lol.

(the poise started before the shot and ends with the follow through tecnicaly, but never actualy stops..all in one, no stopping even at the 'stop' faise.. smooth fluent movent, if you actualy 'stop' stop, the woods erupts when you start moving again, its like a sharp jaggy visable warning thats easily detect by all eyes...)

its harder to stop and start than not to do eather if you know what i mean... its a finite detail thats really not noticeable untill your there and with it, or too fatigued.

this is why they say 10-20 shots a day is better than wonging of 300 shots in an afternoon. after the first ten continual shots your in that anafelactic state and things go down hill. the rest is basically where your physical fitnes is, your stregnth and stamina while you learn to shoot, and learn about yourself. 3 seconds is a long time on target stood.(concentrait on the individual moments of the 'one shot' you'll find 'it' sooner and retain it better).

see it...lift it 1 second, through the scope and aim 2 seconds, let the trigger off and follow through 3 seconds........(a second being subject to your own minds time perseption which varies from person to person and exsperience...for an ultimate theres just a 1 second thing for all of it, thats well fluent lol).

for begining shooting its better to take your time in the early stages, it proves a faster way to learn for a long turm thing, like a ten year starter, the totoise and hare. most airgun mag people are just reading it buying it more fluently than they are shooting. in a hurry murry? relax....lol

savour the moment, perseive all of that moment...and contunue having never actualy stopped to do it.

if your a bit lost at this, a simple exsperience difference concept is your first job, you start, you are the newbie, clumsy, panicking around to keep up etc, yu just dont know yu arse from yu head, 2 years on your in the middle, you see a new starter and think 'uhh useless, look at it', 5 years on your start to see the better guys, but now you start to know how and why theyre better as you learn the second and third faizes... at ten years in, your so relaxed at doing it that its a naturaly fluent thing, you use less energy to do more than the newby thats fluttering about no brained and no skilled...

the longer your there, the more your aware off basically, stuff the newbie cant even perseive let along fully apresiate.

(another fraize is...find yu cool, but that might show my age up a bit lol).

safety first, so it has longer to sette in and become second nature ahead of any thing else....the rest is 'find your way'. you'll find theres more things/people that just get in your way than help, yourself included... and a few that will let you, or help you. choose wisely or suffer it. (its your potential being hindered, its you that wont acheive it if you dont bother in the first place).

patients peeps...patients and let it.
