Fact or Fiction?

Recommended Posts

As the title says Fact or Fiction? We've all heard of the so called "greats" of the lurcherworld be it coursing, foxing, lamping dogs etc? Do you think in your opinion that the majority of dogs gained their reputation as a "great" in the field through sheer hard work or were they just hyped up by owners who had the gift of the gab? Obviously another fact would be that we all have different standards when it comes to working our dogs so perhaps one man's "great" may just be another man's "average" so to speak? So what does it take to make a dog a "legend"..a big win? a big haul? longevity in the field working consistantly throughout? Opinions are like arseholes in that we all have one so come on folks what do you think? ATB Andy.

To many kid themselves on that they have something special when the fact is they have not traveled around enough to know what special is! Honesty as well plays a big part, I don kid myself on that I

A few lurcher owners might though ...ATB Andy.

And some owners just keep quite about how good their dogs are.

Great debating thread Andy  My personal opinion is some dogs were made "false" legends via a careful advertising campaign, Merle could of become one of these "legends". Respected legends in various areas of lurcherwork seem to had made a reputaion through their work in the field, and as you mention longevity, skills and that certain "something" is required with many more cementing that legendary status by producing stock better than themsleves, dogs such as Punch, Dancer, Pie, Blue, Blondie, Merlin, Eve, Seagull and a few more. These dogs attained legendary status through actions, not rumours or being bullied up......

Nowadays "legends" can be made overnight on the internet without any real substance.......

Never saw Merle, so cant comment but i think we all know why he was bullied up and i doubt he ever saw a fox apart from the corpses taken out a frezer for photos. This could be a great topic so i dont want it to be sidetracked with rubbish.

Many of the coursing dogs have had there legendary status cemented through the various competitions they won and videos.........

I think personally alot of dogs are put on a pedestal and given hero status far too easy...perhaps by the winning of ONE match beating a high profile name whether that be a dog or man? we've all heard the tale of the little Cornish rabbiter and the coursing bred dog on the Fens lol?.. or catching one or two decent hauls of gear? CONSISTENCY is what's required imo and thats in the field working to a high standard over a long period of time and then also being able to produce offspring capable of matching themselves...every single one of us who has seen a lurcher at work can actually say "the best dog they've ever seen was?" no matter how good or bad it actually is/was? ..but to see a "great" dog at work? ..i don't think in all honesty many of us could hand on heart say that we have? Honesty as well plays a big part, I don kid myself on that I will ever have something special because the fact is I can never show a dog enough work to really find out......theres lads out there working dogs so hard it would make your hair curl, they are the ones who will end up with something truly special.

The rest of us will accept that we have something we are happy with or dream that we have a world beater......normally, empty vessels make the most noise! ;)

I think some truly deserve the title great , others are the result of clever hyperbole , some of the dogs being described as great would be found wanting in more capable hands .
