does any one know any good books on training dogs long netting

 The concept of a book based entirely on the training of lurchers,.is ,...(like most things appertaining to the lurcher),...not a new one... And, considering the large amount of newcomers entering into the running dog game,.the request for a training manual is perfectly understandable...

Hopefully someone will try to satisfy this obvious need... ;)

you will never train a lurcher from a book there is only one way to train a lurcher and that is to work it and work it practice makes perfect and a little bit of experience on behalf of the owner youngsters coming into the game should be encouraged to work there dogs when they are young on everything squirrels rats birds rabbits day and night theres nothing to be gained from reading books teaching you how to make a dog sit and stay thats bullshit and youngsters should be advised to buy the right animals there is so much rubbish running about now being bred indiscriminately again by inexperienced people in my opinion there is only one author out there who has the tools shall we say to pen a book is phil lloyd the rest of em whos wrote books on lurchers are frauds because it is obvious from the drivel they write they dont know what they are on about i have a young bitch at home now i bred at 8 mths old has done twenty on the lamp on and off for a few weeks now but the strain is right you wouldnt say get a first cross bedy whippet to do it at the same age ive got a few dogs at home that do the all round game to a high standard and im not shooting my mouth if a youngster came to me for advice about a dog i would give him a dog but i would also tell him if hes got any lurcher books to throw them straight in the bin without opening the first page you can only learn from practical experience and the right guidance not crappy books written by crazy eccentrics

It might seem arrogant of me to say that I have considered penning such a treatise many times.. :hmm:

However, there is a slight problem...And it concerns the vast amount of diversity that exists within the lurcher world. In short, we all require different attributes and uses from our canine charges.

What one guy wants,.another does not....

For myself,.I have come 'full circle'...

I started off with highly trained working dogs that 'doubled up ' as farm curs and also fulfilled a need to control vermin and provide food for the family. THEN,..when I moved darn sarf,..I became 'hare brained'... ..and went all over the place in pursuit of the fabulous Brown hare..

This necessitated a completely different style of animal,...faster, more powerful,.and with a relentless determination. THEN,.as the coursing of the hare became too risky for me, I turned to night work and the lamping of rabbits,.'in quantity',...once again,..a different type of jukel was needed...One that could run every suitable night,.two weeks on,.and two weeks off with the rising and falling of the hunter's moon...THEN,...:laugh: I became involved in a few shady financial deals,.and needed to make some cash,..quickly,...so,.it was off out after the various kinds of deer..

Each carcase provided me with money, and once again,..I changed my dogs, and my methods of training.

These days I no longer hunt the deer,...I am no richer of course,..but by a strange quirk of fate,.and a cleverly worded Yellow Pages advert,..I can just about get by as a rabbit controller,.not much of one I freely admit,..but it keeps me in Red Wine and Curries....

As for today,.I now need a completely different kind of worker,...and so it goes on....

Hopefully,.'Inshallah',...I will not have to change my lurchers ever again,... :clapper:

It seems as though I have been going around in ever decreasing circles and have finaly disapeared up my own arse....And the point of this lengthy preamble is....'Horses for Courses,...and I honestly believe that fact alone prohibits any 'definitive' book on the subject of schooling the lurcher....If you want advice on Lurcher Obedience,.there are dozens of 'sit and stay' books available,...and the art of physically conditioning and training a powerful racing speedster is also well catalogued,...And the various methods used to influence a good, steady retrieving cur is also 'on tap',.if you make the effort to seek it out,.

Indeed,.most disciplines are there simply for the asking,..excepting the most important one...FIELDCRAFT...

Only one teacher can educate you and your dog,...and this savage Sensai is a hard taskmaster, perhaps the hardest of all ...The attribute that truly seperates the men from the boys and fraudulant pretender from the genuine hunter is called EXPERIENCE,.

And as much as it pains me to say it,..you cannot get that from any book....no matter who writes it... ;)

All the best to ALL crosses,....CHALKWARREN..... :drink:

cheers mate
