their is quite a few decent bikes in halfords these days chris boardmans and they quite a high spec carrera,s and few others decent ,try the da bomb website aswell

da bomb are good rocky strong as f**k

served me well for the 3 years i had it spent a fortune on it ,well over £1500 but then i stopped doing downhill and mainly start riding tracks and doing buke rides so i change 2 the carrera vulcan which a decent bike for the type of money high spec seen some £700 bikes with near enough the same spec

i do quite a lot of dirt jumping and trail riding and mmy bike started of as a standers dimond back groove now the only thing left of that bike from when i boght it is the seat seat post and frame if changes it all to suit my needs hard tails are pretty in destructably considering if had that bike about 5 years and my brother started of with a hard tail and progressd on to a down hill frame and built it up then snapd the frame so stripd it all down and bought a solid 9 full sus frame and trans faird all the barts to it but for off roading and lost of down hill id preffer his bike but for all rounder id prefer hard tail as easer to build up speed with on hard surfaces as the suspention dosnt absorb all the pedaling power

Personally I would avoid halfords, for £500 I would look at getting a newish second hand bike off ebay or other trading site. Bikes lose their value very quickly, people can spend £3k on a custom balls out bike and sell it for a grand a year later it seems.

This is what I have http://www.marin.co.uk/2012/bikepage.php?ModNo=12PT but the older model, Marin do great frames for the money and I haven't changed anything on mine and it has served me well (but any bike is still beyond my skill level, so that doesn't say much)

Cant see passed Specialized bikes, got a 2011 Camber myself and cant fault it. I agree with looking for a second hand bike thats got all the trimmings. If you could up your cash too about £800 i reckon you could pick up an absolute cracker............
