Paulus, the problem is often one of two things. A fast enough shutter speed and /or the cameras auto focus not working quick enough.

One thing you could try is manually set the shutter speed to as high as the light will let it go, and increasing the iso may help. This of course may make the picks a little grainy.

Looking at them again some other parts of the photo seem OK and its the moving birds which alone seem to be more out of focus, which could just mean too slow a shutter speed.

im going to have to learn how to get of the auto settings then   i was reading the manual written in zulu last night but apparently you can combine auto focus and manual togeather and adjust the settings i.e shutter spead in the auto settings

What make of camera are you using? Another thing to think about is how many Autofocus points you have the camera set to use.

If you are using all the Auto focus points, they will they will look for probably the largest subject in the scene and track that rather than the wee birdie.

Try setting the camera to one single point in the centre, it takes a bit of getting used to, and you'll miss a few to start with. But you will soon get you're eye in, and get on target.

I'm sorry I only know canon systems , but it seems to me that you've got it on manual focus and not auto, unless your AF isnt working, the only other thing that could be the problem that's already been mentioned is your on auto focus points, manually set it to the centre point.
