canaliculata 28
Hi all, got a new pup a few weeks ago, she's a lovely little thing, mixture of whippet/bed/collie/grey, but she's like no other pup i have kept before. I have never known a pup winge and whine like her, to the point she will just look at me and whine, walk over to her breast of lamb winge and walk away.....and she can howl for britain. Anyway when she winges/whines i just leave her too it and go back to her when she stops, up to know there's little progress, but hopefully she will stop..after all she is only 11 weeks. Now to the point, all pups i have owned through my life have had a good appetite, now i know should be feeding her ideally 4 times per day, but most of the times she will just ignore it. I dont tend to leave food down too long, i know some people leave it down for hours for the dog to nibble at as and when, but if its not touched after 10 mins i take it away. I am feeding her sometimes beta puppy with a bit of oxo poured on (or just dry) or a little breast of lamb. I was just wondering if anybody else had experienced this. I suppose the best indicator is that she is healthy and growing and the vet is fine with her, she has her final injection friday. Thanks Quote Link to post
Millet 4,497
I would steer clear of oxo as im sure they have a high salt content..soak the dry food for several hour's in warm but not boiling water..prior to feeding..i mix raw mince alternated with tinned puppy food to make it more appealing..aslong as the pup is shiting for england you will know it is eating enough.. Blue one 89
3 very small meaks a day, is enough for a pup like that, morning, lunch and before bed. If no joy, leave without food a whole day, then feed the next. whan i say small meals, i mean no more than a 1/4 cup, soaked. Nwo and then, some fish like sardines threw it and micem, is good. socks 32,253
If its constantly whinning and has a poor appetite are you sure there isn't anything physically wrong with her ? 1 Quote Link to post
SalukiBULLJP 27
might be constipation off the dry food or even worms? ....id try a worming syrup for pups so not too severe on her tummy as the tablets can be..... then plenty of fishy smelly stuff like tuna, sardines mackrel etc...cheap as chips from any supermaket freezer section or better still fresh from the fish counter- maybe 2-3 times a day and check her stools.......hopefully shes not got something serious ??....... . moonlighter 1,165
My pup was and still is a fussy eater. Can be frustrating at times, especially as my last dog would eat anything. But he looks and performs well on it so that's all that matters. For example, my old bitch would eat a full hare if you let her, and would look like she was going to pop and would also eat a bowl full of cooked veg on its own, where as my current dog would leave a piece of stake and cooked chicken once he'd had his fill! MikeTheDog 153
Assuming the pup is well try making the food more appealing to it, mix in some rice or tripe or scramble an egg with goats milk. Works with mine and they have each other to compete with unlike yours. Quote Link to post

With the strength of modern wormers you don't need to worm a pup twice a week that will do it more damage than good ............... 3 Quote Link to post

gnipper 6,775
My old whippet was a picky eater but she would eat tripe till she looked like a barrel, the two I've got now keep going back to their bowls and give it another lick after tripe too. It's worth a try mixed in with the beta. Quote Link to post

canaliculata 28
Cheers all, Her health is bang on, wormed to date etc, theres nothing physically wrong with her.....she's just a whinger...think she likes the sound of her own voice. I will definitely try her with tripe, something i haven't thought of. She does eat, just not with the gusto all my other dogs have in the past. Im used to dogs trying to get as much food as they can and then some,,,,never had a laid back dog when it comes to feeding time, but i suppose there all different. Main thing is she's fit and healthy. Thanks Quote Link to post
