Any IT people on?

Recommended Posts

I've got windows 7 on my laptop and it used to pick up USB sticks but now all of a sudden it won't. If I plug my phone in via the USB port it will pick that up but if I plug a USB stick in it doesn't do anything, doesn't come up with autoplay, doesn't show under my computer, nothing. I've gone on the start menu, right clicked on my computer, clicked manage, clicked disk management under storage and it's not showing up in that window either. It's as if it's not plugged in. I've tried it with two different USB sticks and it's not getting either.

Irritating as it used to work and the USB port is definitely OK because I can access the files on my phone.

Anyone any ideas?

(WINDOWS 7 IS F'CKIN SHITE BY THE WAY!)

Whats the chances of both sticks being knackered mate?

Are the sticks 100% genuin? my lad recons they do take some very minnor memory then give up.. the fake ones i mean.

the sticks work on another machine bud, not a problem with the sticks.

come on mangy, jog on! :D

Sorry bud,

Was way back on page 8 general section trying to catch up cos was working last 3 days

Is it just the one usb port you have tested the usb sticks in as it could be a hardware failure in one of the ports. If this is not the case then try a system restore dated before this started occurring. If the system Restore does not work install your windows 7 DVD into your comp and set it up as if you were going to install windows 7. Keep a lookout for were it says repair System / Computer and click on it. The Windows DVD will then search your hard disk for the installed operating system. Once it has found it highlight it by clicking on it and click on System repair button or something like that and wait. I usually have a cup of coffee at this point as it can take several minutes.

If neither of these software methods work it would sound to me like a hardware failure possibly power related especially if after trying out the software fixes as one restores your files to the way they were before the problem occurred and the other one restores all core Windows files to their natural installation state bar the registry.

Hope you get it fixed and if you need a more detailed walkthrough just leave a post. I should get back quicker as l am now on page 3. :D :D :D

cheers Callum

The problem is when you plug in a thumb drive or external USB hard drive…nothing happens. You hear the USB sound but AutoPlay doesn’t run, and when you look in Computer you don’t see the drive. More than likely Windows named the drive to a letter that is already in use.

To fix the problem right-click on Computer from the Start Menu or Desktop Icon, and select Manage.

In the Computer Management window, under Storage, click on Disk Management to see a list of drives connected to your machine.

You should be able to determine which one is the drive you’re trying to access by its size and format type. Here we’re trying to find a 4GB thumb drive. Right-click on the drive and select Change Drive Letter and Paths

Now click on the Change button

You can select from a list of drive letters to rename it. Make sure it’s not one already in use or could be in use at some point. Pick a letter toward the end of the alphabet for best results.

You will be prompted with a warning dialog making sure you want to change the drive letter…click Yes

Here you can see we changed the drive from the letter “J” to “U”

If you have AutoPlay enabled, you’ll see the familiar screen asking what you want to do with the drive

You will also see it in Computer now and be able to access the files and programs from it

Hope this helps
