Today the last bit of our permission was explored for the first time this year.

Its pretty high up as the title says, and today was very cold, I would be surprised it it moved above 0 all day, and with the sneaky breeze it cut into you.

 

To be honest, its my favorite bit of our permission, its where I was first taken on the land over 20 yrs ago by the old chap, we have lost a couple of dogs up there, one due to a smashed leg, and another due to a blown heart, both buried up there. Its harsh land. At a glance you would think it was innocent open land, but it has a few nasty secrets that can see man, dog or ferret come unstuck. But it always held bunnies.

 

Back at the end of 2009 a few off here will remember we took a few bags in the 60's, then the snow hit and nearly wiped the rabbits out that had been present every year since I first set foot on the turf. Today really was just prospecting, to see if the numbers were recovering any. Same two dogs as 2009 Jed and Robbie, a little older and wiser, same albino hob ferrets, Spike the oldest at near 6yrs, and Billy Bobs Brother at near 5 yrs old and me and the old feller.

 

Pretty much as we expected, still not any numbers of rabbits, but a few scattered around. Enough for a days sport. a few put up out of the rushes, and most from the warrens.

Must say it was great to get the no nonsense hobs back out, the jills I have are good, but rabbits dont respect the jills like they do a strong hob, if they didnt bolt today, they were always attached to the neck of the rabbit, funny how a good jill seems to do the specsavers treatment, and a good hob seems to kill by taking side of the neck out, I could see looking at the bag at the end of the day, the mess the hobs seem to make unlike the jills.

 

First for me today, as we were bolting for the dogs mainly, I found myself in front of a hole on a slope with a lot of rumbling going on, a second later, seemingly in slow motion, a bit like the Matrix, a rabbit became airbourne, heading straight at me from maybee 4 ft away. Whilst airbourne, unable to change direction, instinct took over,I caught it like a rugby ball, I crossed my arms over it, fell down and rolled over laughing. If only a camera could record everything!

 

Also, the smaller hob, Billy Bobs Brother rode a rabbit out of a warren, went 10 yrds, nearly stopped it on his own, untill the dog picked up the rabbit, still with ferret attached! Teamwork!

 

As said earlier though. it was extremely cold today, and to make matters worse the old chap started with a migraine, and probs a mile away from the motor, he had to sit it out whilst it passed, in a rushy gorge. Poor old bugger.

 

Anyhow, thats the land all worked through, there are still a few spots to work on the slopes for a few days, but anything beyond that will just be setting the future sport back for many years to come.

not bad going there mate,17 is a decent bag,rabbits on a couple of our farms which used to hold big numbers are still struggling to pull back.when we set of for todays outing it was minus 5 finished up with my coat of,strange weather.
