surely not everybody that uses a locator digs at every bury :hmm: i know i dont, i only use a locator as a last resort an then i only ever use it if me or the dog know there has been contact made under the sod, an nothing has moved since, i use bolting jills to empty warrens, tho if the dog or ferrets tell me its not quite empty, then ill use a ferret with a collar to locate an retreive the said bunny/s

Don,t get me wrong mate I can see the plus points of using locators and can appreciate what you,re saying But if you ferret with a locator the very fact that you have one will affect the decisions you make and how you,re dog/ferrets work and a certain aspect of fieldcraft will be lost :hmm:

na mate i disagree, maybe for some folk, an id be more inclined to think that if it was going to effect anybody out ferreting it would be the folk that learned how to ferret using a locator, if you have done any sort of serious ferretin without a locator, then i dont think having 1 in your bag will effect you in the slightest.

what is it exactly that yous think is missing from fieldcraft if you have a locator in your bag, thats like me saying that because your too old/set in ways/too tight to buy/try 1, then youll never be dedicated lol

I,ll have to disagree with you mate, maybe you have the patience of a saint before you whip the carrot out but I can,t see many folk with locators waiting about for as long as yourself and therefore missing out on their own and there dogs true poential, by that I mean not letting the dog and yourself for that matter using all you,re senses and patience, and malt makes the point a different type of ferret being used and bred, killer in as apposed to a bolting ferret or vice versa

I do take you,re points mate and I,d go out and buy a locator if results/big bags was my goal but a result for me is the pleasure and the pain experienced on a day oot and the teamwork involved without a locator, some may say i,m not a serious ferreter, maybe so but ,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I know me and you have had this argument before reDD awn ;)

what im saying is id never call anybody a part time ferreter, sure some guys are out more than others, dont make them any better, same as the size of your bags, thinking back to being a lad, im sure most my lessons were learnt on the day we either blanked or had a 1 a them days where nowt goes to plan, a locator is the same as a net/dog/box or spade imo, its just another tool in our arsenals, i must confess it would depend on the situation on how quick id enter a hob an use the ole disco carrot, if it was young jills an they was getting the run around an me or the dog could hear activity, then id leave them be, let them fugure it out for themselves, tho if my dogs start marking an telling me summat is lay up under the sod, or i heard contact but everything went quiet, then aye id get the ole magic box out an look for a mark, another thing nobidy has said, when yous say walking all over a set waving the arms about like a demented epileptic, then there really is no need for that, if you use a mk3, you can stand still an tell if the ferret is moving or lay up whithin a 20ft radius, an if its still moving, you may aswell turn the box back off, cos its of no use unless they stay in 1 spot :thumbs:

lets face it, only 1 thing is essential to a days ferreting, an thats the ferrets, the nets, locator, even the box is all just there to make life easier for us

I started ferreting with no locator. Got taught a lot by a fella in Ascot, i was an estate manager and an abundance of rabbits and different ground to ferret. I learnt the old school ways. Listening w

Not sure about this one Kittle,, You know I use my locator and see it as a handy addition,, given that I`ve been ferreting without a lurcher for a wee while it has been pretty indespensable.   Eve

Even with a locator I still expect the dog to have a clue about whats going on underground. Was out today, and the dogs were well switched on,,,, minnie is a joy to watch,, but every now and again, the locator came out so that we could get the job finished and move on,,

Now I will say something,, I have always preferred Bolters,, ferrets that kill underground have always been a pain to me,, but lately I have seen that they can be used to great effect,, especially when NOT using nets,, then they can be effective, with a locator,

I think you can see what I,m trying to say, as far as some folk can,t just sit back and enjoy, give there dogs subtle silent direction when needed etc etc but instead turn a ferreting day oot into a circus

I seen a killer in being used to great affect when the jills weren,t shifting them and then you whipped you,re big hob out  and must admit i was impressed using the locator

take the other day though when you and me were out ferreting and you got the locator out and managed to retrieve the rabbit just inside the hole, if you hadn,t used the locator maybe one of the inexperienced pups would,ve had the chance to locate this bunny using there own senses and a valuable lesson on the dogs part would,ve been learned

I joked at the time "aye they locators are still pish if I had Roxy with me she would,ve located said rabbit " thing is mate some truth in that joke ;)

I suppose what I,m really trying to say is there is two different ways/styles of ferreting and i can appreciate both but you know which I prefer

a honest question kr have you ever had a ferret that killed underground regular?

No not regular mate, I only use jills as apposed to hobs which get to handy at killing in, saying that I have stood about freezing my nuts off on a few occasions in the past lol

not this season though ( touch wood ) maybe because I,m familiar with the ground and avoid certain warrens like the plague :D:thumbs:

No mate, but I've been out with some that do. Ferret's down for 30 seconds then it's out with the old knocking box and doing the feed the chickens dance all over the buries.:laugh:

I'm not adverse to using a locator, they can be a real useful tool, but at the same time I don't think they are essential and something that would prevent you ferreting should you not have the use of one.

Not read all the thread yet, but i am as i tyoe.

Personally i know if i leave a few of my hobs for more tha a minute, he,ll be on to the next..

Reading the rest now!

the ways forward not backwards, im afraid whats some call ferreting some would call messing , locators are one of the most handy tools and as for dogs alot of full time ferreters rabbit cacther hardly usd a dog maybe an old spaniel asa lurcher was frowned upon years ago , and as for feild craft ,try proper poaching back when it ment something not cacthing a rabbit , on land nobody cares what your dong on it as its only a rabbit , then feild craft and soundness bottle etc comes forward , im lucky i have 2 or 3 dogs who are trained at the fereting as they tell you were the rabbs are roughly but locator is handy , i use sticks bits of wire still to feel arabbit out of hands reach several tricks ,but locators catch rabbsa s there not always going bolt as the season goes on especaily if there wild stoats etc to make the wise , a locator is the way forward save your pennies or wor harder etc to get one they pay dividends just like aweel bred lurcher in the [bANNED TEXT] hands , good hand made nets etc

One thing I think the emergence of the locator has led to is a decrease in the appreciation of a good bolting ferret. Years ago a ferret that continually killed to ground was seen as a nuisance more than anything else, now they seem to be prised. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but when did digging for rabbits at every single bury become an enjoyable part of ferreting? :hmm:

Very true malt as some of us ferreting was never on permission and a quik bolt then off to the next set was always prefferd.
