out with my daughter & nephew for a few hours

Recommended Posts

i was supposed to go out for a good days ferreting this morning on some new permission but my mate phoned last night and he had to cancel so i desided to have a look out with my daughter and my nephew i was going to go out for first light but when i got up it was raining so i desided to go back to bed for a couple of hours as i didnt want to take my daughter out in the rain and cold anyway when i got back up about 10am and it had faired up so we got up had some breakfast and then got all the nets locator spade and ferrets and set off i went to a bit of permission i have just got theres a lot of rabbits there but not many sets on the bit iv got permission on the surrounding fields are owned by someone else who wont give me or anyone else permission and thats where most of the sets are anyway we got to the first set it was a 3holer in a old tree i could only net one hole up as the others were impossible to net so i desided to use a 7yrd longnet that i made i never used a longnet before so it was a bit of trial and error today so i stretched it out in front of the holes and then entered the ferret the ferret went in and worked the set but there was nothing at home so i took the net off and picked the longnet up and boxed the ferret and we moved on to the next set which was in a little bit of a strip wood i thought that there was a couple of sets in this wood but it all turned out to be one big one that stretched the full length of the wooded area once we realized this it was a mad scramble to get the rest of the nets on before something bolted we managed to do it between the 3 of us and i desided to enter another ferret with it being such a big set and about 2 mins later a rabbit bolted into a net by my daughter who has never picked a rabbit up in a net yet and was a bit scared to pick it up i think (she's only 8 yrs old) as she screamed rabbit as it bolted and i told her to pick it up but she just looked at me then at the rabbit and stood there  by the time my nephew manged to get to it it had got out of the net and ran back to the first set we did anyway there was no more in the big set so we moved back to the first set we did and netted up again and put the longnet out again put the ferret in but to our suprise it went in and worked the set but nothing there the rabbit must have ran round the back of the tree and along the dyke so we picked the nets up again and had a look round the rest of the permission but couldnt find anymore sets so we desided to move to to another bit of permission that i have we tried a few sets but there was nothing at home we moved up the dyke to an old allotment where there a couple of sets we tried the first set on the allotment nothing at home again then we noticed a shed that had some holes going under it which looked well used so we netted up best we could and entered the ferret a few seconds later we could here bumping coming from the shed then my nephew shouted as a rabbit had bolted out of a little bolt hole that was covered by grass and been missed but luckly it was covered by some old chicken mesh and as i got round the shed my nephew had hold of the rabbit through the wire thank god for chicken wire  so that was number 1 in the bag we got back i position as we heard more bumping coming from under the shed and a few seconds later the rabbit bolted from a hole i was watching it didnt purse right in the net i tried to dive on it but just landed in a pile of mud empty handed :icon_redface: at least it kept the kids amused they couldnt stop laughing  we moved on from that set and we did a couple more heading back to the car but nothing more was to be bolted then it started to rain so we desided to call it a day and head for home not a big bag but an enjoyable day with the kids. hope you like the write up and pics atb
