They say that hay will carry lice and mites. This can be true but I had mine on hay for years with no problems, however i have just converted to shredded newspaper. My way of recycling.

Hay ,straw has hollow stalks and can habour insects ,and sawdust can cause breathing problems better with shavings

I'm using old clothes in the sleep box and wood shavings in the hutch and run.

 

They get super warm in the clothing and curl up in pockets etc.

 

Mine have had the same couple of jumpers for at least 2/3 weeks now. Will probably take them out this week and wash and dry but they seem to stay clean, just smell Ferrety. Lol.

Old clothes/ sheets. If it starts to freeze might throw the inside of a cheap pillow in for a bit more insulation.

I use shavings on the floor as it makes cleaning easier and a igloo sort of bed from a petshop with a load of old towels that they bury themselves in!!

sawdust on the floor and shredded paper for the bedding will never use straw again after a infestation of ticks to my ferrets from straw brought in from a pet superstore i managed to get componsation from the superstore for vet and tick treatment

i use shavings in the summer then change 2 straw for there bedding in winter ,

keeps them warm and never had any problems with fle,s or mites.

Have been using recycled shredded cardboard for all of our livestock including dogs and ferrets for the past 5-6 years. A 20kg bale costs about £6.00. Ferrets and dogs love it. Warm, no dust, no ticks, fleas or mites and you can either burn it or compost it when your finished with it.

i use rags and old clothes have done for years my missus was a bit pished when she came home and found me cutting up her clothes for ferret bedding though

We buy it in bulk and have it delivered. But you can pick it up at any of the farm/equestrian supply outlets. It gets sold under various brand names Ecobale, Ecobed, Shredmaster. If you want a straw like bedding Green Mile do a corrugated cardboard bedding for about £7.50 for a 22kg bale.
