Out today with Young Tom.

Recommended Posts

Got a call last night from Young Tom (the lad Johnnyboy and i have been taking out), asking if i fancied a few hours out with the ferrets today. He wanted to check out some land he had got, and try to give his young ferrets some more experiance.

To cut a long story short we walked for hours around this piece of land and saw very little sign of rabbits. I kind of knew when we got there and started, and should have made the decision to go elsewhere, but kept thinking that around the next corner we might hit something.

I could see the lad was pretty dejected, so on the way back to mine, to meet his Dad, we called in at a small strip of woodland by the house of a woman i know.

We quickly vacated the car, and jumped the fence into the woods, and soon after had our first mark, on a decent set under a holly tree, stuck in one of the Jills and after a little bit of thumping, the rabbit hit a net and was scooped up by the dog. As Young Tom went to take it off the mutt, he got his first rabbit bite, but managed to keep a brave face.

A bit further on, we got another good mark, netted up and entered the other jill, and after a while got a double bolt, at either ends of the set and different sides of the fence, I got the one my side, but unfortunatly the on Toms side made it's escape.

After this we had to make tracks back to mine.

So not quite the day we had hoped for, but we will know not to go back to the place again, and at least the lad got a little work for his ferrets.

nice one jai, good to get out, he seems a keen enough lad........i bet it was a shock to the system though when he took a little nip of old buggsy........ shame there was'nt alot about on that new peace of ground, but i guess thats the way it goes...,and good permission is hard to come by, from my past experiences the landowners that gladly welcome you with open arms, generally have very little game on their land, and know that once you've been around once, and seen that there is nothing there,or very little if anything....... there is very little chance you will return......anyway its good to get out even if you dont get much, and the weather today was cracking, fairplay.

all the best,

cheers,

jay. :victory:

tegater - aye, i'm glad he had a bit of sport at the end, and he was made up to see his kits bolting rabbits (as was i, especially as i bred one of them!), but for most of the day we were just trudging around. . . . and yep, he rides with the hunt, shoots, fishes, ferrets, and wants a running dog
