trigger2 3,449 Posted September 25, 2011 Report Share Posted September 25, 2011 (edited) Is a Lurcher going to catch out of instinct or training? nearly every lurcher will chase stuff and catch. imo although instinct helps you to get a dog started only correct training will get a dog to keep going out there and doing it again and again. you can easily mentally break any dog and the desire to run/hunt and chase will practicly come to a stop. However I disagree about this bit: "only correct training will get a dog to keep going out there and doing it again and again." Like Casso said, it is drive which keeps a dog wanting to do it over and over again. Training is what enables you to get the dog doing things in the way YOU want, under control, and not just obeying its instincts and drive. That is the tricky part with some dogs. Too much drive and not enough input from the owner and you have an out of control dog rampaging through the countryside. Not enough drive, and the dog is more likely to give up if things aren't going its way. It can be a bit of a tightrope, balancing the natural instincts with enough training so as to enhance those instincts. Thankfully, a lot of dogs are relatively well balanced: its is the very driven ones which need careful handling if they are not to either overdo things, too soon, too young then burn out, having tackled tasks above their maturity and levels of experience.
