skycat 6,174
Maybe this guy is genuinely wanting an answer to his question! How old is the dog? Has it seen a lot of rabbits by day? Could it be that it just hasn't seen them when they aren't moving? Dog vision is triggered by movement: there's even dogs which can't spot squatters on the lamp. By day the rabbit's colour/fur/outline is designed to camouflage it from predators: dogs don't have as much colour range in their vision as us, plus they are closer to the ground which makes it more difficult for them to pick out rabbits sitting still at a distance. Or, if she has seen them, she's run too many too close to hedges/warrens and knows they'll probably get away: a rabbit running for home in the day time is much harder to catch than one disoriented on the lamp at night. A lot of dogs stand frozen when they see daytime rabbits; its instinct. Collie crosses are prone to stalking them, freezing each time the rabbit lifts its head, but not all dogs have that instinct. So put yourself in your dog's place: its seen the rabbit, freezes, cos it knows the rabbit has seen it too. There's that conflict going on in the dog's head> she wants to run the rabbit, but she knows that the rabbit has seen her too, so its a stand off. Who moves first! Both dog and rabbit are weighing up the possibilities: an experienced dog won't bother running the rabbit if it is too close to its burrow, but once the rabbit starts moving, the dog can't help itself if it is a terrier type mentality: the movement triggers the chase reaction. No point trying to make a stalker out of a missile: just accept the dog for what she is and use her in situations where she can succeed.

Any advise on how to get her going please? give her a trigger sound, a word ,a phrase,a hissing sound that stimulates movement, use it on the lamp, maybe use it when you throw a ball for her , it will work once an association is made within the dog,
shushyjukal 41
She's over two year old now and hasn't got a problem on the lamp. As soon as she sees one at night she's off like a shot and she's seen plenty of stuff aswell. It's just in the day. Skycat has got it spot on. I do use trigger words aswell but she still makes no effort. Maybe like you said she's just clued up that If they are close to the edges she knows there's no point! Many thanks for the replies.
