The Duncan 802
About cleaning the .17 hmr - the concensus seems to be clean fairly regularly (every 15 - 20 shots I've heard many times), but with what? Some swear by boresnakes, others say they are useless. Cleaning rod and jag? What about solvents? I want to keep the rifle accurate and obviously don't want to damage my barrel or shorten its life. Many thanks in advance, Duncan. Quote Link to post
tegater 789
Duncan. I give mine a full clean using bore guide every 10-20 shots depending on what and when I am shooting. The only other difference is that I will give a full clean if the rifle gets wet, no matter how many rounds. Once cleaned with brush and patches, I then finish off with a bore snake. Suppressor comes off rifle every time I finish with it, and before cleaning, but I am sure you know this already, or at least the reason why. I also de copper the barrel each time I clean, with MPro7, but this has come from the strict cleaning drill with other full bore rifles I use. Quote Link to post

SNAP SHOT 194
because the .17hmr, is a small round in a small bore, its a dirty round, and cleaning is recommended after every outing, i de copper the barrel about every 100 rds now or when accuracy seems to drop of and nothing else is evident, i recommend a good cleaning rod, the bore snake is really only for a quick solution out in the field... to much use or side ways pulling action upon cleaning may damage the crown. Snap. Quote Link to post
markha 99
Yup its a dirtly little bugger I did some quick field test and found that my rifle shot nice and tight until i hit 40 rounds then they started to realy open up , by the time I hade gone through a box of 50 the group at 100m was around 2.5". Now If you can be bothered to try and get a boresnake down the barrel after even just a few rounds then go for it! As the brass weight is far to light and youll be there for a month of Sundays before it pops out the end of the barrel hahahaha I always run a rod down the barrel with a wire brush on it and then put the boresnake through it for 10 passes then continue on with my days shooting. However once at home its a full clean out regardless of the amount of rounds fired and currently using Remington 40x bore cleaner as its low odour and cfc free, it seems to do the trick. That is the reason I only pull through once at the end of cleaning, and in a straight a line as possible. Quote Link to post

Deker 3,491
Flippen 'ek I have been preaching the cleaning route forever, and so many have knocked the idea, it works, it keeps the rifle true and sweet and it DOESN'T wear out the barrel if you do it properly, brush, solvents and patches, and keep the crown clean too! Accurate from the first shot if you do it right! Quote Link to post
