DeerhoundLurcherMan 997
As above, is a dogs stamina in its genes? or breed? what would go for longer a fit greyhound or an unfit saluki? Quote Link to post
undisputed 1,664
An unfit dog wont have good stamina no matter the breed. Stamina comes fom good exercise regime and pushing the dog harder as it gets fitter. Quote Link to post

3 Turns 326
i hear some stamina comes through a needle GIVING YOUR DOG BASE IS TERRIBLE LOL  Quote Link to post
coney clucky 93
people say if you want stamina in your breeding add saluki if this is true and lot of people swear by having atouch of saluki then its in genes but add to the fact that alot of other breeds could also add stamina ie collie as the hill collie is very rugged and can add stamin and brains to the mix would it not be fairer to say most breeds with plenty of exercise and road work will build up speed and stamina after all you cant catch quarry without putting time and effort into your dogs my views are that the more running and the more work they get the more they will run Quote Link to post
NEWSBOY 306
a saluki with a plastic bag over its head would have more stamina than a greyhound, never mind an unfit one. Quote Link to post
mackel 31
i have seen unfit saluki crosses take hares that a lurcher would struggle with even when fit alot to do with salukis being run in hot countries. centries of been tested hard mack 1 Quote Link to post
Casso 1,264
todays greyhounds are the sprinters of the canine world, maximum muscle for relative short distances,,shouldn't really compare the two,,one bred to catch, the other bred to race another canine to the first turn,, Quote Link to post
skycat 6,174
Whilst stamina improves with fitness, no sprinter has the muscles capable of endurance work. They are different sorts of muscles. The sprinter's muscles 'fire' very fast: the electrical impulses which make them contract fire much faster than the muscles of an endurance runner, whether human or canine. Here's a link which explains it very well: http://www.mfuz.com/power-training/the-difference-between-slow-twitch-and-fast-twitch-fibers.html 1 Quote Link to post

DeerhoundLurcherMan 997
Interesting..............clearly stamina goes up with fitness but is also in a dogs genes/breeding. So is it easy to say adding certain breeds to a lurcher's blood will improve its stamina? what are these breeds where does the deerhound fit in? cheers Quote Link to post
