I do abit of mole catching for are local golf course where i work, probably not that good at it, but good enough to keep the little buggers at bay, done a few jobs for the members now with success, i use the Talpa mole traps and i havent failed yet with them. Went round to have a look at this job today and this mole is partly on the lawn and having a party in the flowerbed, set a trap on the lawn in a pretty good run couldnt find to many good straight runs as this little bugger is all over the place. I looked in the flowerbed and attempted to set one in there and it collapsed, carried on regadless and found one quite deep so stuck a talpa in there covered it over. Just wondered if this is the right sort of trap for this situation and also when i was finding the runs on the lawn i kept finding three way runs which is frustrating as i cant use the talpa's on these, but wondered what other people do once they have located these three way runs. Pretty confident i will nail the bugger with the traps but just wondered if anyone had any suggestions in these situations.

Cheers..............

if you have opened up a three way tunnel work backwards so you have three seperate runs and set a half barrel in each, one of them will nail the bugger.

I must be doing something wrong with them half barrel traps as there always full up with dirt when i go back to them, i always cut the soil out carefullly and always dig the killing knots in the bottom of the run, there must be a knack..., like i said im no pro at this game but learning as i go a long, its more of a guilty pleasure, cheers for the tip.....

Went back to the job and caught the mole on the talpa saved me laceing it with talunex and the owners seemed happy, seems like i was making a mountain out of a mole hill.

That bugger made me earn my money this time.

Hello to the mole catchers. I only recently discovered these forums & Hunting Life. Lots of interesting stuff posted on here.
Part of my duties as a maintenance man on a private estate is pest control and that's how I got into mole catching. I'd done plenty of rats, mice, wasps and ants etc before the mole hills started bubbling up, so I found an old Duffus in a drawer and went from there. I started doing private mole jobs last year - all gardens so far - and have started generating a useful 2nd income out of it. Just beer money at the moment but more than enough for a few pints. I like the work and am fascinated by all the different traps and their suitability to different situations. I use a lot of Traplines and I'd be interested to have other opinions on them - the good, the bad and the ugly if you like. Although I carry Duffus and Talpex, I've gotten into the bad habit of defaulting to tlines which has revealed that certain moles won't have anything to do with them - they seem to just chuck 'em out the way. They also often fire without catching. Not on every job, but often enough to remind me that there is always another tool for the job. I really like the Trapline, and I'm working on refining my setting technique constantly. Just wondered what other mole men's experiences with them were. And to say hello.

      Just out of interest......

Which trap do you reach for first? You can explain why if you choose.

For me, it's the Duffus every time, although I can see the attraction of the Talpex type traps.
