British Mentality in sport

Recommended Posts

Given Andy Murray's failure to beat Nadal or any of the top 3 tennis players when it matters is there something thats inherently wrong with our mentality to sport. What is it that prevents Brits from taking that final step in top class competions and dominating. Is it our attitude, lack of facilities or are we just not that competative as a nation and content just to take part for the glory of competing.

Are to many of our sportsmen overpaid for very little effort or are some sports seen as elitist and and only played by certain sections of society thus having a smaller pool to chose from ie how many inner city kids play tennis or get good coaching. Most competitors from other countries just appear to be hungrier or more determined.

There's not many things that we're brilliant at....we have the odd success now and again but there just seems to be something lacking. Is there anything we excell at?

Hang on a minute, Murray is scottish.

I've no problem with supporting our british sports men/women but when they come out openly stating that they don't follow the same sort of support I personally hope they fail.

As for the British sportsmen who just can't cut it at the top I think it stems down to how our sports are handle or the lack of it at the early ages.Until we invest in the youth and push them like other countries we will never be able to compete

So you think lack of investment is the prob...what about those who have the money and access to top facilities. I forgot Murray is only a Brit when he wins something :whistling:

Sorry mate but if Murray got to the final of wimbledon I'd still be cheering the other guy.And if he won he'd still be scottish to me.

AS for lack of funding you only have to look at how other countries handle their young prospects. In America they have sports scholarships and the university leagues are as good as some of the professional leagues.China, australia russia and all the major sporting countries harness the younsters and help progress their talents

is that because you dislike murray,or just scottish people in general?

No problem with scottish, welsh or irish people. What i hate though is people knocking england at every chance.Ok we all know we're not as good as we'd like to be but we can all dream.Personally if scotland made it to a world cup and england didn't I'd be right behind scotland.I'd also be right behind murray and think the lad is talented, Ijust can't bring myself to do it after what he said

The thing is mate America pride themself on their scholarships and university leagues, but thats in sports that only they play !.....we can all invent a sport and say we,re the best at it but if no other c**t plays it thats not all that impressive is it.

All parts of the world have their own popular sports, football is the most watched and played sport in the world yet none of the countries you mentioned are any good at it......its nothing to do with lack of funding its to do with dedication and hard work....look at the former eastern block countries if you want to see what dedication and hard work can achieve....as a perfect example, this fight tonight, these Klitchsko boys have zero natural talent but are strong dedicated athletes who have been raised to believe that the basic qualities within any athlete if harnessed in the correct way can overcome a lack of natural talent......Many sporting nations would do well to take a leaf out of the eastern block countries attitudes to sport in the 70,s and 80,s ;) ....whether they enjoyed sport as a leisure activity the way we do....well thats another matter.

I understand what you are saying about the sports that they invented, but they are also world leaders in most sports. In this country unless you have the time and money alot of talent either gets wasted or over looked.Sport is pushed in schools and unless the parents push/take their kids to certain sports these kids won't be seen. What this country achieves for the size of it unbelievable, but just think how great we'd be if we actually made an effort kids

Just look at what we do with our young footballers. At the age of 11 they're chucked on a full size pitch to play 22 man games, and all the emphasis goes on the fastest & strongest kids. IMO they should be made to play 5 a side on a half sized pitch with more emphasis on skills. The full size pitch & 11 a side games will still be there for them in a few more years..

I agree 100%....when it comes to football you cant fault our passion or determination.....its the brainwork we need to work on.......Our game has always been about the fittest strongest league in the world, then we wonder why in international knockout cup competitions we get undone with skill and flair. If Messi had been English he wouldnt of got a look in as a kid he,s too small and would have got kicked up in the air....did you know in Holland tackling is an offence in junior leagues !!

America certainly dont have the reputation for boxing they once had....why do you think they have no interest in the world heavyweight championship.

Infact id go as far as to say Mexico probably have double the amount of world champions America have at this moment, and good old Britain are probably only a few behind them.....America lead the world at sports only played in America :D

Boxing....wrong....Mexico

Athletics...wouldnt swear to it but my guess would be Russia, though fair do,s they still have a fair shout.

Cycling....dont know.

Swimming, possibly but id say the Aussies would run them close.

mma  who cares its not even a proper sport.

Tennis....possibly.

Of the worlds most popular sports only boxing could really be included, and they dont lead the world in that.....athletics though yes thats a fair point

3 of the most popular sports in the world are Soccer,Cricket and Hockey......of which America are good at neither.

Spose your right and thats one of the reasons the heavyweight division is so poor at the moment all the fight money is in the lower weight divisions now
