Why is it that so many people take on a pup THEN come on sites like this and start asking what should I feed it,how do I train it,will it be all right living outside etc.

I know there can be some genuine concerns that arise after you"ve got your pup but wouldn"t you think that folk would have done some basic research BEFORE they went out and bought a new pup.

Makes you wonder what sort of dog owners there going to be and even if they"ll still have the dog by the time it reaches a year old.

Maybe its worry or genuine concern im forever questioning or second guessing whats best for my lot in the case of the big lad i was sceptical about giving him raw in case it mzade him even more mad than he already is yet its one of the best things i added in his diet.My terries really ill and has had some big ops this year and ive tried every fancy food on the market to no avail and were back to well beloved and raw.She had a special food from vets and no matter what i did wouldnt touch it no matter what i added etc just hated it.So things change maybe the last pup they had was 16 years ago and they just 3want to best by it not a bad thing if you think about it logically

yeah things change ive had some advice from friends and people on here that i took and never looked back things i would never have done before yet wouldnt think twice about now lol.Plus some of the lads/lassies are only young and its there first dog its good for them to ask people that know about the breeds of dogs and have kept them for years. My vet nearly had kittens when he found out i give my dogs raw bones and i stopped in a panic only to learn that theyre not a problem and as long as its raw theres no issue,I used to cook all the meat my dogs get and now i wouldnt dream of cooking it

Yes we can all have concerns, worries, problems etc and I"m not saying theres anything wrong with asking questions as thats how we all learn BUT some seem to take a pup on and have no idea as to what to feed, how often etc (basic stuff) I just feel that some of this very basic stuff should be asked/researched before you start.

just out of interest, if you were feeding your terrier raw why did you try to get him to eat "special" food from the vets? only reason for asking is that when my mastiff was seriously ill last year he wouldn't eat and was on a drip. The vet said to bring a variety of foods just to try to get him to eat something, I took raw beef, cooked beef, raw chicken, cooked chicken and boiled eggs. When I got there the vet said try him on all the cooked food but don't give him the raw....which I found quite bizarre considering that's what he was used to eating. Surely it's not wise to shock a dogs system by changing the diet when they're already ill???? vets really do make me wonder sometimes! Sorry, it's a bit off subject!

In answer to the original question....doing some reading/research on the internet doesn't teach you absolutely everything you could possibly know about ANYTHING! you could read 20 books on keeping dogs and I can guarantee things will crop up that you hadn't thought of or read about, that's the beauty of a forum, you can ask people who may have experienced the same thing that's happened to you. But I do know what you mean, especially on the ferret section....some people get a ferret, put it in the hutch and then start wondering what it should eat and what bedding it should use etc. Very strange that it hadn't occurred to them to find out before they actually get it home....the world is full of strange people!

was to do with her kidneys which due to medication they gave her made her kidneys work less efficiently or something they werent happy when it ook her off it but she wasnt eating for days and she is ill enough without adding starvation to it as well.Shes riddled with tumours and i am stuck i can go for another op last one near killed her and she goes on meds after it and she could get another 6 months or maybe a bit longer all depends on the dog etc.Never been a decision ive had to think about in the past dont know why im being a wuss now she wouldnt touch the stuff so we went back to kibble and raw mixed again and she seems happy at least might not do her any good but at least shes content

I can see where you coming from, but i suppose we forget that we all had to learn once. But you are right pity they didnt check things out 1st before they get the pup. But if they didnt ask on here or where ever, some of these poor little pups, would be in a real mess either die or very ill  . I will always try to help anybody with dogs, having had lurchers 25+ years+other breeds

Couldn"t agree more we all need help/advice at some time, new to the game or been at it years we can all come unstuck BUT it just puzzles me as to why somebody would go out and buy a pup AND THEN start asking questions on feed etc, wouldn"t it make more sense to ask that sort of thing BEFORE you got the pup home.

Just add I"m not trying to make a big deal over it, just curious as to why folk would do it

Theres only so much you can read about from a book but when it comes to reality its a different story, everyone gets stuck every now and again even myself i will admit, i aint affraid to ask advice of my friends who have more experience than me, not everyones as lucky to know good dog men for advice, so the next best thing is on here imo.

My favourite is when someone asks -

"I got a pup of whatever x, what shall i call it"???

I mean, who the f**k wants their dog named by a load of folk on a forum, if you cannot even come up with a name for your own dog. . . . . . you got problems.

Well im 17 and a know my basics etc and a ask questions on here because there is hundreds of people who. Have kept dogs for 25plus years which means 25 plus years of experiance and you get a wide variety of answers off people who must know what there talking about with all them years working training feeding dogs and get the best results so who better to ask than the folk on this site in the lurcher section ?
