lurchergrrl 1,441
And I've spent a lot of time on my permission and in the woods etc., watching them. See them all the time More info for you, not as common this far north but not rare either. http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/n/nuthatch/index.aspx All the time? are they not the same family? and wheres this permission or woods, i'd like to see them pls... Yep, I see them all the time. And why should it matter where my permission is, and why would I want to show it to you?

I'll see if i can get some pics, but the old camera is feeling...old
lurchergrrl 1,441
I don't really remember them tbh Moll, just a lot of birds in general (sadly no ginger cocks ). We'll get lots of pics of them next time I'm up - which will be soon, the kids are pestering me daily!
goshawking719 492
In the same area as you RFYL and have to agree with lurchergrrl that they seem to be plentiful. We must have 8-10 of them that visit the bird feeders outside our office like clockwork- messy little buggers who will pick up, test and drop a dozen sunflower seeds before they find one they like- lol Intresting little birds though- nice pic
runforyourlife 361
right, well they must just be void in this valley. For what reason i dont know.... Maybe i could come and photograph some mate? The local bird watchers club has an offical one being spotted, lol. Within the vacinity of my home. And none visiting bird tables...How far off are you from me exactly in miles....?? The reaSon i ask that lurchergurl, was to see some more. Thats what spotters usually do as a rule. pool imfo... like she says however "why would she want to show me". I do however walk all over her area very very regular..Probarbly more than most . And i hold my hand up, i must be blinding in my old age. lol. Unless they are local to a few certain woods.. cheers anyway mate.
Malt 379
Official estimates of bird numbers about the country as a whole aren't terribly reliable IMO. I reckon populations naturally fluctuate and move about over time. Take starlings for example. People on here seem to think they've become very rare, but they seem to be as many as ever round here, if not more in recent years..
lurchergrrl 1,441
I think you asked me because you wanted to take the piss, or perhaps you think I'm lying about having it. You see my permission is not the epic, vast tract of land you would consider acceptable or worthy. It's not teaming with all manor of game, as would befit one superior hunter and bird spotter such as yourself. I got it because I've been commissioned to photograph the horses that have livery there and farmer trusts me. It's a quiet little bit of land, close to me, where I take my family - dogs and kids - and sometimes my friends (a few from here have been). I get a bit of fun there, but admittedly not much. What I mostly get is peace and quiet, the way I like it. It's next to some National Trust land, the warden for which is quite happy to let me poke about and do what I like. I expect since you walk round my area so much more than I actually do (ppffttt), I shall run into you soon enough. I look forward to that. In the meantime, I'll try to get some nuthatch pictures for you - so I can share the information
Moll. 1,793
That is definitely a lie....you dont have any friends My fav bird here and one you rarely see it the tree creeper, secretive little bird, looks like a mouse scurrying around the trees and walls. And for the first year ever yellow hammers have been visiting the garden, they are not rare but have never in nearly 6 yrs been in the garden. Loads of greater woodpeckers, blue tits, great tits, chaffinch, and types of sparrow, tawny owls. And currently have a swallow on eggs in my hen feed shed, delightful to have but it shoots out everytime i go in, just waiting for the thing to get tangled in my hair A distinct lack of wrens this year, i wonder if the severe weather we had has almost finished them off here Never see Starlings which is a shame, i love their song, rarely see blackbirds either. It's not so great when you've got 100 or more of them sat on the phone over the front garden when you're trying to watch something on the TV..

I'm not bothered about being friends with you, I only use you for your venny pie I've seen plenty of tree creepers here too, funny little things. Gold finch, blue tits, chaffinch, sparrows .. and sometimes at night I can hear tawny owls out back. I even saw two long tail tits in my garden, that was a pleasant sight. When the winter was at it's coldest there were sparrow hawks hanging around my estate. Moll there's usually starlings and blackbirds out here, you're welcome to come down and see them but mind for the bats getting caught up in your mobile blonde birds' nest

Ian that's a fair shot, considering how fast they move. I gave up ages ago

I thought you couldnt get baby sitters to walk your dogs. Glad your situation has changed.. You must be going to an area that no one else knows about. As it was only last night that ispoke at length on the phone to a very dedicated spotter who does 100's of miles a week, aND he asked me if i had seen any tree creepers. I have seen 1 and it was some 20miles or so from my home, in a heavy plantation. He had seen 2, and the club he is in, have put it down to the very harsh winters, almost wiping them out. Your very lucky you have such a good spot. Also they arent usual pack birds or groupies, and usually have there own terities, so to have a good number in a small area is quite unusual... good luck with it anyway.... I wouldnt be putting birds up and asking what they are... Thanks however for the vote of confidence on hunting... I asked you because i was interested... why is eveyone so paranoid on here.
