I have a 14 week Whippet Pup, who was weaned on raw, I was given about a dozen different complete samples, which I tried dry, and soaked in Goats milk, and also gravy, but he wouldn't touch any,so now I just feed raw, two chicken wings smashed with a hammer, for breakfast, then a variety of meats, Chicken, Lamb, hearts, and Beef I pick up at the quick sale at Morrison's, I also buy frozen mince from Iceland £3 a kilo, and Lamb rib bones. and some Veg, I am not complete Barf as I do sometimes give cooked Chicken, I also use Seaweed powder,Brewers Yeast powder, and flax oil.

I know you can buy Raw meat cheaper but I only have the one Pup.

Have to say he is in excellent condition, and having bred a lot of pups over the years, I do find he shits a lot less than when on Kibble. :good: and Sardines in Sunflower Oil, once a Week. :toast:

I get as much waste from the butchers as I need free of charge. Chicken carcasses, skin, turkey necks, lamb ribs, bones & occasionally organs. My bullx was fed on this diet from 8wks, he's now 3yrs & never had any problems. I try & give him trout or mackerel when available as a replacement one day a week. Wouldn't feed anything else aslong as my supply is available

thanks for the advice guys its a great help but what is barf

BARF stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or Bones and Raw Food: depending on who you talk to. Google BARF and sit down for a long read

To be honest, some people make a right meal (scuse the pun :tongue2: ) out of feeding raw. The only thing to remember is that feeding raw should mimic what a wild canine would eat: think whole carcase: red meat (muscle) bones, bits of skin, tendon and sinew, a little offal (liver, kidneys, heart) and a bit of minced veg which is the human way of giving a dog the vitamins and minerals a wild dog would get when it eats the intestines and their contents. Plus the fact that wild dogs scavenge eggs, dirt, insects, dead things, various types of plants, fruit when in season and fallen on the ground: apples, blackberries etc.

It’s as simple and complicated in theory and action as you want to make it  .

Simple – three types of food protein, fat and carbohydrate, feed a mixture of those and it will be fine ie a complete will give an appropriate mix or you can make your own with butchers waste meat ( this will have fat in it ) rabbits once it starts working ( low fat so add a little extra ) and a carb of your choice such as biscuit, pasta etc. Add table scraps, veg, eggs as available.

Personally I use both regimes, a complete as a base to which I add table scraps, eggs perhaps once a week, plus meat and bones a couple of days a week. This gives a broad spectrum of nutrients and gets the pup used to variety which is always useful. I don’t add a supplement as a matter of course as if it isn’t getting the right nutrients from the diet then the diets wrong and a supplement won’t make a bad diet good.

I think i will stick to meat and adding veg and other nutritious foods when aquired. How some people feed the over cooked cereals to their working dogs amazes me!

Where's the meat ???

Quote, Dogs don't like too much Meat Flavour, and Dogs prefer more Sweet.

That Video is a great advert for raw feeding.
