How important is it to socialize a pup???

I must admit that it would be top of my agenda to ensure the pup had been well socialized before I would attempt to bring him out in the field. I was in the company of a fella this evening and his pup is seven months old, and a bundle of nerves the poor pup is, a prim example of how not to rear a pup. It urinated every time I petted it and would cower into its box and come back out again, sorry sight.

I could be wrong but it sounds to me like it's not properly socialised but the dog sounds like it's been given a good leathering as well. Again like I said I could be wrong but that isn't normal for a young dog IMO.

My pups wouldn't leave you alone at 7 months old if you petted them, the little b*stards would be running under legs and around your feet looking for fuss and to play fight, not cowering and pissing themselves in fright.

Of course its important to socialise a pup, or you end up with something that you cannot take out and about without the fear of it ripping someone elses dog or kid about.

But what you have seen is nothing to do with socialisation, its down to the fact (as someone else has stated) that the twat of an owner has given the pup a damn good beating. To beat a dog like that until it pisses itself at the mere touch of someone is f*****g disgraceful and is only done by f*****g retarded morons (and cowards) that dont know what they are doing, and, i think they should have the same treatment done to them until they piss themselves.

Not sure if I entirely agree with you on this one. I know the fella and I don’t think he mistreats his dogs, while on the subject of dogs been mistreated and thus resulting in them pissing when approached by a person as you put it, I have a Springer at present and she is the most pampered little bitch you could ever find, and yet she still wets when greeted by a person, she is full of life and loves the attention, but wets herself, so I am not entirely convinced its down to a beating that this pup received. Just to add that his other two dogs are fine around people.

Is it possible that the pup has no social skills at all, which in return results in him reacting in such a manner, would love to hear from a person who can speak with authority on this matter.

Many thanks for the replies.

ive reared pups that for one reason or another havent had as much socialisation as they needed, once i realised the dog was becomeing nervy with strangers i bring them for a crash course in socialisation, i go to a busy city centr with my dog, walk it through the crowds, the dog may panic and resist at first, stop every once in a while to re-assure it, once the dog has relaxed a little seeing all the people go past sit down on a bench in a busy area or outside a busy pub/cafe and drink coffee for a while, ignore the dog except if it shows snappyness or extreme panic then correct or re-assure the animal appropriately, i repeat this exercise as often as necessary until my dog gets over its fear, i allow some strangers to fuss the dog, even if the dog is a little uneasy but not if the dog shows fear based aggression.

Some dogs get so excited they pee on you, a lot of mine will take a slash on ya shoe and my boy will always slash on ya because hes just like that, never hit my dogs, funny how on this site you can hang an inocent person whom youve never met and how you know all about said person from a one line sentence, some of you guys should be working for ci5  .

Of course socialising is important, it is IMO the most important thing we should be doing with young. I get my pups walking over crunchy plastic, leaves water, i use starter pistols at a distance then bring them nearer over time, play firework cd's etc.

Car boots are great also (as said) traffic etc, but the idea is to show your pup as much as you can for the first month as this is when they digest the most information 6 - 8 weeks is the optimum i think.

YIS D

you can have pups from the same litter as we all know, some bold, some nervous, some mid.So if he had brought a nervous pup, he aint done (nothing) to help it with its temp, or like been said he as been to hard on it fact. Even nervous pups can+will be better than this pup, i had nervous bitch like it all her life. But she wasnt that bad even at 5 months old, its 1-2 of the above .!!

My old lab would get so excited at meeting people that he would pee when he was a pup. He grew out out of it as he got older though. I have also seen dogs that piss themselves from fear and it's easy to tell the difference.
