skycat 6,174
Give her a bowl of warm water with about 1/4 milk in it. Just to get her drinking: canned chicken soup is very salty so don't be tempted to give her any more. Once she's had a drink get a lead on her and drag her out for a pee. Some bitches are so worried about leaving their pups that they will hold their pee for days which won't do her bladder any good. Make sure that no other dogs can get to the litter: if you have other dogs, or even kids, make sure they are not around when you drag her out for a pee or she might refuse to pee and try and get back in with the pups for fear that other animals or people are getting to her pups. Sometimes they might go a day or two without crapping, but if she hasn't crapped by the third day make sure she spends enough time outside to empty herself. Some bitches need dragging by the lead out of the nest to pee for a week or more: in which case make sure you do that twice a day until she comes of her own accord. Has she got access to a run or is she shut in a shed/the house? Best scenario is a kennel away from prying eyes and other dogs with access to a secluded run. If not, then you have to make sure she gets out twice a day to pee etc. 2 Quote Link to post
optimus 447
thanks for that mate, A LOT OF BITCHES GO OFF THEIR FOOD DURING WHELPING, MORE SO IN THE SUMMER HEAT. HOWEVER SHE SHOULD DEVELOP AN APPETITE & ALSO SHE SHOULD DRINK WHICH IS VITAL FOR HYDRATION & MILK PRODUCTION. GIVING YOUR DOG A DIET WHICH ITS SYSTEM ISNT USED TO CAN UPSET ITS SYSTEM & ALSO FEEDING A MORE EXPENSIVE DIET CAN ALSO CAUSE PROBLEMS WHEN YOU SWITCH BACK TO THE NORMAL DIET, YOU COULD BE MAKING A ROD FOR YOUR OWN BACK & AN EXPENSIVE ROD AT THAT. airbourne 128
A little warm milk and raw egg and mix some calcium powder in it. Quote Link to post
pattstaff 157
Bear in mind that the bitch has eaten all the afterbirth which is natures way of keeping the nest clean and also providing the bitch with nutrition for the first few days after the birth when she cant hunt to well. That said keep an eye out for all considerations already listed.
