Ideation 8,217
I had a call on Wednesday about some bunnys in a garden, living in the flower beds, had to go down today to shift them and despite the low numbers i was expecting a b*****d of a day, waiting about (no digging allowed). Instead it went very smoothly, 4 rabbits home, 4 rabbits in the nets. 2 dead bucks and 2 does destined for the warren in my garden. Job done, in minimal time with minimal fuss Now i'm going to treat myself to a pie and a pint and then go shoot some tree rats! Sorry the photo is a bit crap (phone). Quote Link to post
THE GRIFF 8
Good result mate, I dont know why people make such a song and dance about summer ferreting we did loads last year and loved it. We dont go every week like in the winter and we still had a few good days. If you dont mind a bit of waiting about and a few nettle stings then it can still be good fun on a nice summers day. Ideation 8,217
To be fair i can't think of anything worse than doing the farms and estates in summer, about my limit is gardens etc. If it's bigger then it's a gun job My main issue with summer time ferreting the main places is that there are so many mini buns underground that the ferrets just run in circles killing them, it takes ages, you cant get a mark to dig, and you leave the warren filled with the dead, f*****g it up for future trips. This was pretty chilled, but you could tell the dog and ferrets were not that thrilled with the heat. I used one of last years kits though (bred by my buddy johnnyboy68) and it was good to see her work like a wee demon, as i only really gave her a run out right at the end of the season Quote Link to post
johnny boy68 11,726
So what was it then?.........Summer Hunting(as the title suggests) or pest control? The title just asks to be taken the wrong way by hunting folk and anti's alike Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,217
Haha, it was pest control done through the medium of hunting during the summer Figured 'summer hutning' would get a few views DISCLAIMER - ALL RABBITS HARMED WERE DONE SO STRICTLY ON A PEST CONTROL BASIS Quote Link to post
THE GRIFF 8
A few permissions we have are estate run and we aren't allowed to shoot, so the only way we can get them is with the ferrets. Its doing these permissions we have got other permission where we can shoot so we like to show our face through the summer and keep at them. Where we are going this week we are now allowed to shoot due to us doing such a good job with the ferrets in the past so we are just showing our face. We will still enjoy it though, there mostly nice big sets in open grazing feilds. We might even take the hushpower and the rimmy which should be good fun. Sorry forgot to add; 'ALL RABBITS HUNTED BY ME ON THIS COMING SATURDAY WILL BE DONE ON A STRICTLY FUN BASIS AS THERE ARE NO LAWS AGAINST CONTROLING RABBITS IN THE UK ALL YEAR ROUND, THESE RABBITS ARE COSTING FARMARS THOUSANDS OF POUNDS A YEAR AND NEED CULLING' Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,217
I agree with johnnyboy68, although taking the dog out and seeing the ferrets work is quite nice, the actual killing of rabbits isn't fun at this time of year, apart from the odd buck. Pest control, wading through nettles, jumping on scuttlers, with the number os kills constantly on your mind, is never my idea of 'fun'. It's a necessary evil and i'll be honest we try and let any doe run on. And before any smart ass says it, the landowner doesnt care if they are dead or alive as long as they are gone. johnny boy68 11,726
Fun and Killing should never be associated with each other..............THE GRIFF you come across as a bit of a smug feckin shooter! 2 Quote Link to post
The one 8,594
Time to move on from the ferrets there getting the sun on there backs for a few months they deserve it .Time to work the snares and traps and lamp now for summer rabbit problems Quote Link to post

If its fun in the winter, why cant it be fun in the summer???? Wether these rabbits are pregnant or not they still cause thousands of pounds worth of damage. The farm we are going to on sat has holes all over the fields where sheep, cows and horses are kept, the rabbits cause havvock. They eat the grass that the animals should be feeding on and over the winter they ripped all of the plastic of the sylidge bales. Thats not to mention the collapsing stone walls beacause of the rabbits digging under them. Sorry, but I enjoy rabbiting and the fact that its summer makes no differance to me what so ever(although I dont go as often in the summer). These rabbits are vermin and need culling. Do you not kill mice, rats, pigeons, crows, squirels and other vermin all year round ????????? Quote Link to post

Mate I don't kill feck all,all year round.I can find plenty of fun things to do in the summer without killing stuff. I could've been with Ideation today but I don't get the same motivation or thrill from it because us has hunters should hold a little respect for what we hunt.Once the respect is gone then the whole ethos of hunting is down the swanny too. 1 Quote Link to post
THE GRIFF 8
Fun and Killing should never be associated with each other..............THE GRIFF you come across as a bit of a smug feckin shooter! I use the word 'fun' meaning I enjoy beeing out in the field(summer/winter/whenever). If I had used the same words in regards to winter shooting or winter ferreting then chances are nobody would have commented. I dont understand what you mean by 'smug shooter.' As this is someone elses thread about a day out and not a thread about me controling rabbits during the summer perhaps you can explain what you mean in a private message. Quote Link to post
