5 years for 91 year old soldier for folling orders 60 years ago

Most of the Nazis claimed to be 'following orders'....

Murder is murder. I for one am glad to see Justice done, no matter how long it has taken, or how old the murderer is.

Lets not get into Nazi apologism....

well if thats the case wat about america dropping the athomic bomb or sadams soldiers he murdered thousands not sayin that i disagree with ya pal but the world was fuked up back then

The reason for the atomic bomb as f3kd as it sounds, was to save lives. The yank generals estimated that 1 million U.S soldiers alone would have been killed just landing on the shores of Japan due to how radical they were!

an easy million, those japs would have fought to the last kid to protect thier emperor and tokyo.would have taken years to defeat that country.wicked nation of people.notice the old war veterans will publicly say they hold the germans no grudge and have attended war memorials in germany as well as them comming here.not the case when it keeps to the japs.turn there back on the jap prime minister on his state visit a few year back.I used to know an old pow from burma..he absouletley hated the japs passionetly.he told me they had cruelty and torture down to an art.Pilots who were caught were beheaded on the spot.i never actually knew how much torture the old guy went thrugh but you still see he emotionally still felt it.he had some disease that kept him on medication even at 70year old.they seem a nation thats got itself together now though as far as keeping themselfs to themselfs and not getting involved in war.come to think of it,im sure they have something in thier constitution that makes waging war illegal.mind you they are still no shy at cruelty to things that live in the sea lol

HAHAHAHA.........Makes me chuckle when on the one hand you see folks constantly moaning about scum and immigrants then slate a group of folk who actually had the iron will to do something about what t

Aye, we invented the concentration camp.   Half the folk moaning on here about this guy would be at the front of the que if Britain decided to form it's own version of the 'SS' to help us through

Just seen this and imo its pointless. He was following orders all them years ago. It will be put down to justice, nothing more than germany trying to blame forigon nationals. And for those " families of the Victims" its nothing more than spiteful revenge. What benifit will this serve? What a shite world we live in. Banging up an old man on his death bed. Whats your opinion does he deserve what hes got or should he be allowed to live his inal years as a free man.

A German court has found John Demjanjuk guilty of helping to murder more than 28,000 Jews at a Nazi death camp in World War II.

He was sentenced to five years in prison, one year less than prosecutors had asked for, but will be released pending a possible appeal.

Prosecutors said the Ukraine-born Demjanjuk, 91, was a guard at Sobibor camp in Nazi-occupied Poland in 1943.

He denied serving as a guard, saying he was a prisoner of war and a victim too.

Lawyers for Demjanjuk have said they will appeal against the conviction?

"The court is convinced that the defendant... served as a guard at Sobibor from 27 March 1943 to mid-September 1943," presiding Judge Ralph Alt said.

"As guard he took part in the murder of at least 28,000 people," he said.

An estimated 250,000 people died in the gas chambers at Sobibor. Demjanjuk was convicted of being an accessory to the murder of the 28,060 people who were killed there while he was a guard.

I'd be happier if they hung him ,but even if he was 150 years old ,if he is guilty, he should pay the price.

Agreed the one Pacific battle that always stuck in my mind was the battle for the island of Tarawa. The 4,500 Japanese defenders were well-supplied and well-prepared, and they fought almost to the last man. It cost the Americans 1000 men in 78 hours of fighting and its unreal when you see the size of it, less than one square mile...

Bet you that battle was intense though...

We simply can't understand that mentality of 'a glorious death' over here. It goes against our natural survival mentality of wanting to 'live to fight another day'.

My neighbour (the one i mentioned about 15 posts ago, that opened a can of worms about who he 'murdered' in WW2) told me once that his ONLY intention during the War was to survive and help his pals do likewise, by WHATEVER means necessary.

He said it was hell fighting an enemy who didn't CARE if they died  . He wanted to stay safe and alive yet his enemy wanted to literally get in his face and stab him, rather than shoot a rifle from afar :icon_eek: , men who were happy to surrender and blow themselves (and you) up :icon_eek: , men who were happy to die in combat :icon_eek: . It ties my mind in knots trying to even understand that.

It must have been hell and anything that 'happened' over there, 'stayed' over there, if you get me........... Well, aaprt from the stuff he told me, that i posted earlier in this thread
