The old Irish Wolfound of years ago, i reckon looked more like deerhoundx bullgrey of today, and like the stags that Dan uses in the USA today Quote Link to post
Rabbiting man 1,192
The modern Irish wolfhound is a re-created breed, in which the baseline incorporated those few that were remaining when the breed almost died out, and which may well not have been purebreds. To these was added the Scottish deerhound, and several examples of large shaggy hound that conformed more or less to the type. All went well and a dog levelled out at a useful size, and in theory able to do its original job, until the regrettable desire in the showing world to get the size up resulted in extensive addition of great dane blood. This proved disastrous, the show standard great danes already being short-lived oversized dog which passed its numerous health problems on to the reinvented wolfhound. As a consequence, the modern Irish wolfhound is lucky to live in health beyound its sixth year, and is so heavily built that it would have trouble sustaining a canter, never mind pursuing and catching a creature as athletic say a fox. As such, it is quite unsuitable for inclusion in a lurcher breeding programme in the uk. Additionally, being a rare breed of dog, very expensive to buy and to breed 3 Quote Link to post

Cleanspade 3,324
we had a wolfhound many moons ago. he was exersized with a small pack of russells and picked up a september cub allthough to be fair it was more the fox ran in to him rather than him running it as far as dogs go he was a belter but as a running dog he was a none starter. lived to the ripe old age of eight which was good as he was a rescue dog badly treated as a pup Quote Link to post
