scothunter 12,609
Evelyn, Princess Blücher, an Englishwoman who lived in Berlin during the First World War, in her memoir published in 1921, recalled hearing German general Erich Ludendorff praise the British for their bravery and remembered hearing first hand the following statement from the German General Headquarters (Grosses Hauptquartier): "The English Generals are wanting in strategy. We should have no chance if they possessed as much science as their officers and men had of courage and bravery. They are lions led by donkeys." Ludendorff: The British soldiers fight like lions. Hoffmann: True. But don't we know that they are lions led by donkeys you were right fell cheers mate

He died just before i was born but my dad said he never, ever spoke about that war, no matter how many times they pestered him as kids. We researched his service and it made me feel sick. One battle he was involved in (Loos 1915) his division supported a Scottish division, that suffered 8000 casualties out of 10,000 men . Imagine being there, knowing you are next to attack, having seen the first wave get annhilated. Only god knows what those boys had to live through. I can't see today's hooded yobs and jobless wastrels going ott to have a go at the hun. RIP Claude Choules God bless his memory and all those who 'gave their today for our tomorrow'. In November, remember to wear your poppy with pride.
