noticed the other morning my bitchs foot was slightly swollen and hot to the touch, seems she got a puncture wound in between her toes whilst mooching about in the woods, anyway soaked it up in salt water for 10 min knocked the scap off it and pushed out a lot of puss,iv now just kept it clean regularly washing it out with salt water,no puss left in it no swelling to the foot now either just slightly around the edge of the hole but there is still a hole there,it looks like there is nothing to heal/knit it closed just an open hole, not bleeding or anything,no raw edges to close the hole if that makes sense, what do you reckon i should do with it,cant see a stitch doing much good either as i said no raw edges to seal it up

hi,

in my opinion (for what its worth)

i have dealt with many of these in my time and what i would do is pick the scab off inc any dead skin and dip the foot in hydrogen poroxide ( by christ the dog wont like it!!!) only for about 5 seconds. all the crap inside will fizz out. flush through after fizzing has stopped with salt water and dab dry making sure no cotton wool is left behind then either spray with iodine or purple spray. the dog will hop about but trust me follow this advice or rist bad infection in toes resulting in possible amputation.

Looks good and clean. Just keep it that way: if you take dog out keep it on the lead and away from dirt. The dog should be able to keep it clean itself by licking: let it do that unless it is going crazy and making it worse. Dog saliva actually contains an enzyme which breaks down the cell walls of bacteria. Don't put anything on it, antiseptics or anything else: strong antiseptics can actually delay healing as they damage the tissue. If it gets dirty just wash out with salt water again. Should be fine. Don't be tempted to stuff it with anything either.Should take about 10-14 days to heal. Just keep an eye and make sure there is not more sign of infection, though the fact that pus has already come out of it means the dog's immune system had already walled off the infection, which would have eventually come to a head by itself if you hadn't noticed it.

Deep wounds heal from the inside out so the best thing to do is what you're doung ..kep it clean ...salty water to draw any crap out left in the bottom of the wound ..If you think get a feeling that all isn't well (and you seem knowledgeable) off to the vet i'm afraid

I'll 2nd the above you want it to heal from the inside, an abscess may form if the surface closes over first, clean water/saline and rest, if not improving vets.

my bull cross had an hole like that between the pads and straight through the bottom of the foot I had him jabbed with pennicilyn and washed with salty water and now its healing well this was about 3 or 4 weeks ago and its suprising how quick it heals .Dont be tempted to let him off the lead until it closes as skycat says
