Why you see dead moles hung up in a line on country fences ? Is it a British tradition ?

 

Dont know if its for the same reason, but my local farmer ties birds heads on the fence to ward off others

The mole catcher showing the farmer how many he's caught. In the past killed vermin would be hung on fences as it was thought it would deter others, crows for example. This is seen less these days as people become more sensitive about stuff like that.

Ahh, right....that makes sense really. A sort of obvious tally. It did cross my mind, but because i've never seen rats or other vermin hung on the fence, i thought there must be a different reason.

 

Must admit, i've never seen birds heads on a fence.

During the mating season moles go to a fence,This place will have been used for hundreds of years,Once There The males climb up and Hang on,The females being fat and lazy just hang around at the bottom,Watching,Basic illy the longer the male can hang on the more females he gets to mate with.

the keepers gib was the old keepers way of showing his trapping skill and showing his head keeper he was doing his job

I think its what is called a jibbit it is used for vermin to show what you have caught and in my opinion is a load of bollocks it should be stopped by all countrymen it can only give us bad press if you want to know what ive caught ask me ive got it written down in my book . That reminds me of a story i would like to share with everyone .When we go ferreting we write down the bag in a little book .One day we are coming back after a day trough the yard of one big estate we have done for years stood in the yard is the farm manager always a good idea to stop and say hello on stopping he ask how the season had gone .So out came the book .Well we've taken over 100 rabbits off this estate this year we said .O very good said the manager i will have to tell the owner what a good job you are doing . Do you think he may give us a gallon or two of diesel for our efforts .No i think he may send you a bill for the rabbits .

I too can remember seeing the corvids hung, have not seen any of those for years now though.

I think if we forget all the traditions passed down by our forfathers it will/has become a society of boring folk with no identification.

ALTHOUGH I AGREE TIMES HAVE CHANGED AND WE MUST USE A BIT OF COMMON SENCE , THE RIGHTS OF WAY ECT HAVE OPENED UP THE COUNTRY SIDE THE DAYS OF THE JIB HAVE GONE BUT AINT NOTHING WRONG WITH KEEPING RECORDS , A TRAPPING DAIRY OR GAME DAIRY

I remember seeing dead foxes hung on gates, I always thought it was to show the land owner that the lads he allows on his land to deal with pests are doing a good job?

Was thinking that myself, just ditch the book and use a fag paper
