Sand dunes

Recommended Posts

It really depends on the type of dunes. Large dunes that look like miniture pyramids are a pain in the butt, as you cannot dig to the rabbit, unless you are carring shoring with you. Gently undulating dunes are not so bad, but be prepared to dig a very large hole if you do have to dig.

i have never experienced it myself. but i know sammy vaughan from powys was the licensed rabbit controller for the dyfi nature reserve whose land adjoins the seashore at ynyslas dyfed. he ferreted in sand for years.i have quite a number of letters of sammy explaining ferreting in sand how to dig etc. but for me i think i would rather stick to woodland.

The lad was 16 and thought he would live forever. He had tunneled in the dunes for years without any problem. As I stated in my first post, gently undulating dunes are not a problem. It is the steep dunes that cause the problems.

They get a mark on the locator, 3ft, no problem! But, they have to tunnel in the side of a steep dune, They are a foot away from getting the ferret when it moves away from them, towards the centre of the dune. Do they say we will wait till the ferret comes out? Or, do they tunnel on hopeing to get to the ferret and rabbit before they move again?

All I am doing is trying to point out the pitfalls of ferreting in dunes.

One of the guys off of here has permission for them and we never really had a problem apart from once a deep dig into the side of one but as he dug in i watched his feet ready to pull him out ,but we got the ferret and the rabbit ,The biggest problem is the amount of holes

I`ve ferreted a lot of sand burrows, and they can be a nightmare,

They are not all the same and some can be fine. Tend to find that the more vegetation in the sandy ground ,the better it is, seems to be more stable,

The only ferret I have ever lost whilst working was in sand. Gutted me and I avoid this type of work if I can
