ex track dog (worker)

Recommended Posts

There seems to be a lot of ex track greyhounds about (free to a good home)at 3 years old.

3 years i would of thought would be about the end of a racing career but has anyone ever took an ex racer on as a working dog.

If not would you of thought this a wise idea to do so.

Just thought if it was worth it i would give it ago. Thought and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers fellas

i've taken on a couple of greyhound bitches for lampin, to be honest, chances are you will get it and it will be reared like a farmer rears cattle... no name or any sort of training! so alot of work needs to go into them and your temper will be tested to the full! recalling a greyhound that doesnt want to come back whilst out lampin is a nightmare! this may not be everyones ideal method but i invested in a canicalm collar and i got results in lightning quick time!! once recalling was achieved everything else fell into place! the running style of them is usually straight line bolt of lightning type stuff but its a pleasure to watch them blazing up the field gaining ground at every stride! it takes a while for them to learn to settle but the 1st few outtings are just the same as when they are being sprung from the trap some learn to steady but most wont because i think its just been proprammed into them! also because of there alot out action style they tire quickly...

i had 2 killed and 1 that i passed on to a fella that fell in love with the dog... the 2 that were killed hit wire but 1 should have lived but the vet made a bollocks of a job puttin it under anaestatic (spelling?) .. ...

i would recommend one, there is lots of them needing homes and theres no reason why they cant do lurcher work

Never yet seen an ex racer that was better than an average lurcher. A mate had two some years back and they spent most of their time laid up with injuries from shoulders to wrists but mostly feet trou
