after astrange and disturbing incident with muntjac i would like to here any bodys comments on the shooting and 7 month cycle of these elusive little deer

Can you tell us a bit more about the incident? They can be a real problem to control because they can breed all year round and the does may have dependent young at almost any time of year.

i would like to know what incident was disturbing?

Muntjac do breed all year, so sadly the does will usually have young or be in young, nothing you can do about that.............there are loads round me, a local shoot i know has a muntjac/vermin drive every march, that seems the only way to cull large amounts (last time i went they shot 27) beaters and guns in line (no dogs) walk through the large woods and shoot them with 12gauges loaded with AAA, the distance is always less than 30 yards as the wood is so thick you cant see much farther

All are shot bucks, does and young.

i am not averse to shooting muntjac with my shotgun either, i have been asked by a landowner to thin the little buggers at every opportunity, the piece of land is not suitable for rifles either due to the proximity of a road/house/footpath (see the shooting page on my website-link on signature)

I cant understand why they are so despised down South , I think they are a fascinating little deer to stalk :D

Nice shooting bud :victory:

Nemo...Ethics shouldn't come into it, control is control... with no closed season its up to the stalker to make an informed and responsible decision on which beasts to take.

I agree with foxhunter and I wish they would hurry up and cross the border :clapper: so I can stalk this little deer.I have been invited down to Wiltshire for a few days muntjack stalking at the end of February and I can't wait.I'll post the photo's as soon as I get back.

so does the same apply to shooting hares , if there are plenty in your area ? should they be treat as vermin and shot at anytime of year ?

Its up to the individual as to what they shoot when and where .Down south ,around us, muntjac are shot on sight as vermin .Everyone has different reasons but mine is to stop foxhunter from getting one down here come May.lol.:laugh::laugh:

What are the average weights in youre areas?,i have cought by accident two Muntjac with my Golden eagle whilst looking for woodland hares, one was a 17lb buck grolloched and the doe near 24lb mark. And yes he took them with little fuss.

I do get the odd road accident munty from my friend who stalks as he gets called out to RTA,s with deer.

Be interesting to see what size they are in youre area?

Can you enlighten us as to what strange and disturbing incident occurred or is it more a strange and embarassing incident you would rather not admit . i think you will find also that they are further north in greater numbers than most think. maybe your not looking hard enough. are you a novice to stalking or shooting ? come on nemo more info . :hmm:

The 'ethical' control option consists of shooting only heavily pregnant females - and males. This would ensure that you do not orphan dependant kids.

Personally, I believe that deer 'management' is a luxury you have - only once a cull has reduced numbers to a satisfactory level.

Until then - they should be hit hard.
