border lad 1,047
a lad bred a litter of pups from a first xs collie greyhound to a 3/4 grey/1/4 collie dog, now the bitch was was only an average rabbit dog, she could catch the odd Hare with a good lye on, the sire could do his job on rabbit Hare, Deer, he offered me a pup when they were about 6 weeks old, ((( and I said to him they will only be average dogs, any way he kept 2 pups back for himself a dog an a bitch, at 6 months old he landed down at ma house, and showed me this very nice dog pup, this pup had everything you would look for in a pup of that age,and he said if you want him you can have him, well that dog started taken rabbits at about 7 month old, and carrying them back to the house, on his own, (( I was working up in the Shetlands, Sullom-Voe,1976, when people had FREEDOM TO HUNT, the local butcher said to me, every time I come down the road, that dog of yours is carrying a rabbit, (( early morning, time, He took his first Hare single Handed at about 12 month old, he had everything you wanted in a dog, Speed, and change gears, Stamina, and brains, and stood 26" with length, and a nose to Hunt, and that dog, done it all himself, self taught, self entered, he was a Natural, in those days we worked 4 weeks on the Island, and one week at home, and I HUNTED the week with him, he opened my eyes many a time, he was a "dog", then My Travels, and work took me to Africa,in 1979, I sold the dog, to a so called friend, the deal was, that when I come back, I get a pup off him,I arrived back in the UK, 1986, South Africa, was standing on its head, and the economy, going down as fast, I never got a pup, and the man who bred, them had given up on them, some one had pinched the litter sister, had also turned out to be a real one too, and to this day, I have not had a better dog, I have a sapling of 9 months, different breed, with saluki, blood in him with a small touch of collie, stands 26" at this moment, ((( but I don't have the same Energy, now as I had back then, the enthusiasm, is still there, the hunting Laws, has changed, drastically, and game has got very thin on the ground, the Roe has increased in numbers, Hare and Rabbit, there numbers has dropped alarmingly, Quote Link to post

shepp 2,285
My collie grey practically trained herself, I can send her off in any direction, point her to a squatting rabbit while she is in the middle of a field. I never actually taught her this so it puzzles me how she learnt. She is that bright, if one of the trackie bottom brigade owned her, she would probably be slipping them thick c**ts on the rabbits. 1 Quote Link to post

watchman 256
iv only had two collie type lurchers over the years ,to be honest everything came naturaly to both of them very easy to train to a good standard, bull x types iv had to be honest have been easy as well as long as they are treated firm from the outset, the worst i had was a saluki/grey that would cock a deaf un at the drop of a hat and hated being scolded and would sulk like a baby i put it down to me not having the right temprement to train this type of cross Quote Link to post
