stevethefish 80
Went on some of my permission today for a look round for tomorrows ferreting trip, "I was asked to remove a couple of cormarants on the lakes" I had a ramble around to see what was worth doing tomorrow and got a shock as I was watching this set, a grass snake came slithering out. I watched it as it sat in the sun warming its body before picking it up for a closer look. It was ice cold and I was surprised it had ventured out this early in the year, it must be hungry or something. I showed it to Pete and then gently placed it back where I found it to watch it slither back down the hole, guess we will leave that one tomorrow or the ferrets will shorten its hibernation a bit more. Jordb543 9
I would love to see a grass snake, ive not seen on for ages, seen the odd slow worms and luckily i know a place with alot of crested newts so not all bad news, He was probably having a new year bask now that the temps are getting warmer would a ferret kill them handy or would he have his hands full so to speak The ferret would kill the snake without a doubt. I wouldn't be so sure mate i think it would last longer then you think, grass snakes can hit 6ft in some cases, and they arnt venomous and dont constrict, so when they bite their food its to eat it whole so they cant afford to let go, so as you can imagine they have a bloody good bite on them for an average sized snake. I would put my money on the ferret but would always choose the snake i owe it my ones to stick up for their wild cousins lol Edited February 1, 2011 by Jordb543 1 Quote Link to post

Great pic mate.. looks a good size, of all the years i walked the countryside i have never saw one. Only saw one snake ( adder ) and lizard, both within 10 mins of each other at Derwent water many years ago. Quote Link to post
stevethefish 80
This place is great for snakes, there's loads of grass snakes and the odd adder. Summer time there are loads basking in the warm sheltered areas around the lake that does not get fished, no interference and plenty of voles mice etc. Pete the bailiff has seen up to 15 in just a short walk there, first time I have seen one there though. As a nipper I used to catch them on the grass bankings close to where I lived north of sheffield and sell them to the pet shops, I got £2 each then, that was almost 40 years ago though. It was nice to see one today though, probably about 3- 3.5 foot long, I put it down when it hissed, that means it was pissed with me I guess. Quote Link to post
