Rabbits Night Shooting

Recommended Posts

Guys,

I am currently have a permission upon which i can hunt rabbits at night. However i understand this time of year isnt great, i am not seeing that many. I have been going up around 8pm at night and early morning 6am and seeing 1-3 most nights but thats it. The owner asures me there are loads up there and the droppings etc would indictae he isnt lying. What times do you guys go to see the most rabbits etc. Just looking for a bit of help and advice!

Thanks in advance

rabbits are creatures of habit......they could be out at any time of the day....this all depends of predation during day/evening.........rabbits will go out and feed when there is less chance of being predated......if your permission is in a area of high fox/badger/owl pop they will more likely be out during the day and less during the night(makes sence really)just try diff times of day without rifle and spend few hours observing then head to farmer with data.......if he knows they do damage during day maybe he will let you go in then

Or very early in morning.....4-5 am......try them times.......i would do 12 hours one nite then 12 next day to get an idea of when they show thier killzones

also with breeding season comming soon they will start comming out more often.....some doe's will already be breeding from now through to august so in next 2 months there will be an explosion depending on the weather

Bug's are able to breed all year round, there is no 'Season' as such.

If life essentials are in abundance they don't stop breeding.

Only if the essentials are scarce will they not breed as rapidly

Generally Bunnies are Crepsicular in nature.

Best time to get them is an hour or so before and after sun up and sun down. But it can vary greatly from both time of year to the surroundings and number of natural predators

good avice there.. this is just me but i go at different times every time i go out because of work. late at night is usually most productive for me. from 10-11pm onwards. also, pick the right conditions. dark windy nights make a massive difference. if you turn up on a silent and still night and slam your car door it carries for miles. my permission is funny mate some times i go and see 2 or 3, other times there are pleanty. try it on a dark windy night mate and let us no how you get on. all the best

Agreed Tony but with the winter we have had so far the chances of any young surviving are slim........this also as you know effects thier food source....i was always under the impression that bug's really get it on from mid to late jan to aug this also is when i see more of a population explosion...but i suppose it's diff everywhere

If we are getting into weather conditions also, go after a deep covering of snow has just thawed and take a bag ;)(may have missed the boat this year lol)

Dark nights help, rain dosent seem to bother them unless it gets silly and then I leave em to it :), a little breeze helps, wind is more of a hinderence for me. nipping out literaly an hour before an iminent storm can produce the goods apparently ( is still on my list of things to try tho).

Just mix it up mate and see what works for you :) just get out there mate I learn as mutch going out and blanking as when I get a couple of shots off. Everyone has diferent land/rabbits so will tell you something diffent so my advice is get to know yours:)

Just to add to this post, does anyone go out in there own or always with a partner, iv been a couple of times by myself and find it a little odd? Anyone else?

I dont mind either way mate, altho it is nice to share your enjoyment with others, I love it when I pull of a good shot to see the grin on my mates face, we tend to do our own thing anyway and have a laugh at the end, im sure if you wanted to go out with someone or let someone come with you there will be lads on here near you :)

And because someone asked ,

In the last 5 years ive always been alone when hunting , be it through the night , early morning or evening . My sons has been on a couple of occasions , but mostly alone , and i mostly shoot evenings / night . It can be spooky sometimes and ive had a couple of strange experiances , but still , you want the bunnys you must put in the hours ........
