what barrel length ??

hi i have a ruger 10 22 .22lr and recently got it treaded for a modatrator ..

now i am thinking of cutting the barrel from 20" down to 14"

because with mod on it is 25 inches long the barred that is

what should i know [bANNED TEXT] i get it cut .

will this decrease aim velocity ??..

i have just read a great article in understanding firearm ballistics (robert a rinker)it is said that the barrel on a rimfire after 14-16 or so inches actually slows the round due to friction as max speed due to the small amount of powder is reached earley.i could be wrong but well worth looking into.i think even if this is not the case any velocity loss would be negligable.

I really don't think a shorter barrel will hurt at all, some people have them as short as 12"! the shorter barrel will make it much more manouverable, I'd go for 14" myself, as Mike says, I'm not surprised that the round slows down in a longer barrel, it's not as if it really has that much powder behind it!, you also won't affect the accuracy much either.

I have a 12" barrel on mine and its fine the dealer I had it transferred to was also sceptical as to wether the barrel was too short to burn all the powder but after 4 months vie had no problems whatsoever.

for years the trade and gunsmiths alike all beleived you needed along barrel for every thing accuracy power reliability distance,,,then some smart arse cut his barrel down significantly and there was no noticable difference,,,all the gun manufactures said it would not work,,,Samuel Colt went on to make millions of weapons,,,,Anshuts think thats how it is spealt cut one of there rime fires barrel from 22" to 14" they did a load of tests and found that all the powder in a rim fire is burnt in the first 10" and the last 4" helped the round stabilise,,,depending on the way you barrel is made (cold hammer fordged ect) then cutting it down will not reduse its accuracy or shootability make sure it is recrowned well,,,however it will loose a small amount of muzzle velocity but as said you will not notice the difference as it is negligable how much it looses,,,,my CZ's i have cut down from 22" to 16" and they both shoot as sweet as a nut,,,and if there was a problem chopping down the barrel gun manufactures would not be doing it themselves now.

It may cost a bit of MV. It may lose a bit of accuracy. You won't see any practical difference in the field. On the range yes, but 1MOA is all you need for a head shot.

 

 

 

Edited to add, Rimfire Magic supply a 12.5" carbon fibre barrel! Remember that 12"/30 cm is the legal minimum so leave a bit over for a re-crown if mecessary.

The following information is from Mark White's book "The Ultimate Ruger 10/22 Manual and User's Guide"

So, based on this, it would seem maximum velocity in a .22 is acheived at 16" with a loss of about 5 fps/inch over the next 12 inches.

monet wasted if you ask me, i have a cz lr and i have shot the cz in the shorter barrel and there is no difference at all dont bother mate, im sure its not to heavy i know it could be a bit long but i think its better because it balences better, but entirly up to you if you feel better with a shorter gun go for it there really is no difference, good luck with it anyway pal.

WOW GUYS THANKS FOR ALL THE INFO EVERY QUESTION I HAD is answered,

my new stoxk came the other day so i will fit it and post sum pictures later

i have decided to cut down to 14 inches the overall lenth of barrell is 19.5 inches so with mod on it

that makes it 25.5 .

after cutting down to 14 with mod on it will b 20

Hi I would push a .22 pellet (barracuda) through the tube to check that there are no loose spots in the barrel before you chop. The rifle will feel a bit more lively to fire with a short and light barrel, though a short varmint barrel keeps enough weight upfront to negate any muzzle movement. A bipod helps stability with a short light barrel. Those are my finding.

should have it back tonight ,

ok cut down now and boy i am happy with it the gun smith cut it down to 14 and made a 2 inch peice to put on the end to make it legal .

he told me the legal lent is 16 inches with the extra 2 inches on
