you know my guy, im hoping he will do everything i want him to.

 

my definition of an "all rounder" is that he dose everything i need him to. im my case, ferreting, lamping and abit of day mooching.

Its all down to you now mate i no that dog of yours has the minerals to be a good un he has great instinct and great drive good nose now you just need to show him how to bring it altogether

my opinion a good all rounder is a jack of all trades but maybe a master of none.

never had what i would call a decent all-rounder,they may well have excelled in one discipline but only half heartedly taken to another,plenty lads talk of the perfect all-rounder i mean the question is asked often enough but to me is there really such a dog?...........i think probably not if truth be known,what with different dogs bred for different jobs and so on.

surely an all-rounder must be capable of taking all quarry no matter what,work day and night,with ferrets,long nets, gun and hawks etc etc.......never come across one yet and the day i do then the owner of it must have some serious time on their hands to cover all the aspects of hunting with a dog as a working partner in all this, as you say its the definition of all-rounder that is the question,and to the lads that think theirs is an all-rounder then i applaud you

 

it seems that if your dog can go out with you on lets say three different types of hunting for example lamping,ferreting and can catch a daytime hare then we automaticaly deem it to be an all-rounder............not the case imo

I AGREE with flint, there wont be many lurchers out there that are masters at evry disaplin.

 

but if you the owner is happy with an avarage all rounder then thats fine.

that little kelpie cross i have is good lamping bunnys, and a good ferreting, but thats about it, and wil retrive birds when roost shooting, but thats your lot,,

i dont expect my dog to be a true master at everything just be able to do enough to keep me happy.

 

im not an expert hunter and dont do enough to consider myself anywhere near a master so how would my dog ever be.

no not realy watchman,, i dont concider the kelpie cross even an avrage all rounder, she wont do some quary, and even as a young dog befor the ban was not much cop at catching hares.

 

like i say a good rabbit lamper , and good ferreting comanion. but im happy enough with that cheers TOMO

maybe the best allrounders belong to a young lad of say 15,16,or 17 yrs old who's always out with his dog and not a care in the world and loves lamping, ferreting and just mooching and bushing, if the dogs well bred also then i reckon that dog will be a good allrounder...

To my mind a lucher capable of taking all edible game day and night needs the physical and mental, attributes to acheive this . has flint says not amaster of any one discipline but capable on all edible game , dogs of this calibre do exist they usually excell on one given species but take the full spectrum of game to be had .rabbit hare deer feathered game. to much emphsis hi taken on dogs about what a all rounder his ,beleive me if you posessa animal that can take game in reasonable numbers on any terrain, it to me justifies the title all rounder ,cherio folks bunnys

For a dog to become a "true all rounder" then the owner will have to work that dog very hard and very often and invariably will be running the gauntlet of the law in the present climate.Though there are probably a few still around you won't hear of them The boys doing all the "stuff" don't broadcast themselves or their dogs these days
